I need help finding poses I can do with 3 herniated discs in my back. I was doing a routine, but back is acting up so have to give it up. Was looking on some sites, but would have to go through every pose to find ones that don't have back problems listed as a condition not to do. Hope someone can help, because I really enjoy yoga and was seeing benefits.

  • I am a yoga teacher and would highly recommend you find a teacher who can work with you and give you modifications until your back stops acting up. Our bodies are so unique and individual to each of us that I would be concerned that you will injure yourself even more without professional advice.

But if that is not an option, here is some general advice for protecting your back after disk injury:

While your back pain persists, do not bend forward past 90 degrees with straight knees.
    Avoid all seated forward bends.
    Avoid rounding your back.
If a pose causes any pain, tingling, or numbness, stop immediately.

Check out this site which is a link to Yoga Journal that will give you beneficial poses you can do by following the detailed instructions described in the article:

    Hope this helps!

You should try to find an experienced teacher to help you. I don't know where you live on the Island, but there's a possibility there's someone nearby. You could call here: http://www.iyengaryogacentre.ca/ and ask if there's an experienced teacher in your area. You never know.

Roger Cole is brilliant (the link that yogichic posted), but if one of those poses hurts your back, stop.

Thank you for the advice, I would love to get an instructor, but I live in a very small town and closest is two hours away. I will check into the links and very much appreciate the help.
