Lifting Weights is AWESOME...

I've been working out with a personal trainer for the last 3 months. For the first two, we worked on my endurance. I have gone from someone that could barely get off the couch without straining to someone that pops right up. My trainer mentioned about 6 weeks in that with my body type barbell and lifting heavy would work well for me. I hemmed and haaaahed... I was nervous about it. I was worried that I would become a meat head. 3 weeks ago, I said let's do this!!!!! Let me tell you, I am strong!!!!!! In 3 weeks of dead lifting and other heavy lifting I have a new lease on what I'm trying to do here. I leave the gym and my arms and legs are like jello. BUT there is this massive rush that I get. I really want to do it everyday. I know, I know... my body needs rest, but this is addicting. It feels like over night my push ups and supermans have become so much easier. I turned some corner. I know that I haven't lost like I should, but I know that I can run my dog around the park and get up off the floor so much easier. AND it makes me HAPPY. My suggestion to others would be to keep an open mind and even when you feel like nothing is working and the scale doesn't move.... there is progress.

    Yep.

I've been a cardio-only kinda girl for a LONG time. I trained in martial arts & kickboxing for 10 years and ran and did yoga but haven't lifted weights in 15 years or so. Didn't really feel the need to...

Having said that. I tried it. I read a post on a blog that changed my mind about it called "Body Composition: The last five pounds and how to deal with problem areas" - http://gokaleo.com/?p=666

October 1st I started with weights - one week of Cathe Friedrich's Muscle Max DVD followed by now 4 weeks of Stronglifts 5x5. In that time, my weight has stayed stable and I've lost 1" off my waist (which is where I hold on to my fat).

So I'm converted. This runner has backed off the mileage for the winter in favor of body recomposition. I'll ramp back up more mileage in the spring but for now I want to get strong and leaner.

Oh yes. Being a former Cardio bunny, I have turned into a lifter myself. I reduced cardio to 2x 30 min HIIT. Can't even understand any more how I could love cardio so much.
    Lifting rocks :)

Ditto! I used to run and go to spin class 5 days a week. It took so much energy to start NROL4W and to get over the fear of the weight room! Now I love it! I don't even want to run anymore. I am following the new rules book and I am "walking away from the treadmill".

I am doing the same thing. I am backing off the mileage and cardio until I start training again. During the winter I lift heavy and do it more often.

If you guys do HIIT, do you do it on off days or right after lifting? Trying to decide. Tonight, I did Jamie Eason's Playing Card Plyos right after lifting. Kind of sort of REALLY stunk. But I only had 1 round in me - not 2.

Well I don't do HIIT, but I do my running on days before lifting, which is why I rotate through lift, rest, run, lift, rest, run. That gives me "technically" 2 days rest from lifting and the running doesn't affect my ability to lift the next day... even if I do hills or speed drills it seems. Maybe it will affect it down the road as I'm lifting heavier, but for now it's working. I tried lifting after just one day in between and it was really hard. I prefer two at this point.

I get up early to do my workouts and it is so much easier gettin up on weights days! I so love weights, I used to be 1000+ calorie burn cardio girl but now I would take the iron any day.
Such a buzz feeling stronger all the time

Another ex cardio bunny.. I would do three body pump classes, and sometimes a ripped class, and three zumba classes a week. Sometimes I would throw in an elliptical marathon while I caught up on biggest loser. Man I'm glad those days are over. Now I lift three days a week, and do a HIIT and a zumba.... Done.
  • That's good ****!!!!! i try to tell females that lifting is better than just doing cardio. the average female thinks lifting is going to make them bulky. but what most fail to realize is that's what's going to lean them out. don't get me wrong you should incorporate 2-3 days of cardio. but what good is it going to do if you're not gaining lean muscle, which in turn will make those cardio sessions more productive; because more lean muscle equals more calories burned...even at rest!!!!! for all of the ladies that understand this and can relate to what i'm saying...keep working hard and making ALLLLL KINDZZZZZ OF GAINS!!! and for the ones who don't get it.....better get real and stop wasting time in the gym.
  • HIIT cardio 2-3x a week for 20-30 minutes is where it's at.....i love HIIT cardio.

Yep, I'm a former cardio queen. Note the work "former". I love the iron! I've seen so many changes in a short few months that I never saw in years with cardio! Still want to work in a couple session a week, but not near as fun as lifting! Hope more women discover the benefits!

    Yes it is awesome!!

I've never been a cardio bunny, I've only forced myself into running etc. in the past because I thought that was the only way to get fit and lose weight. I started lifting 5 months ago and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It's the first time I've actually found an exercise I genuinely enjoy doing both while I'm doing it and afterwards. This alone is enough to keep me doing it for my health.

The added benefits that its slowly changing my body into one I thought would only be attainable by VLCD is amazing, all while eating 2700 cals! And in actual fact this body will be so much better than the skinny me I used to strive for - it's a stronger, healthier, energy burning machine.
