the races i've done up mountains (as people have already attested to) are BRUTAL.
find a steeeeeeep incline and train both up AND down. Although gravity can be your friend, going down can be just as challenging (with less control).
this is gona kick *kitten* pals!!!

My first plan is to get myself comfortably running 4 miles on my normal flat trail I run. Normally I do 3 so that is not too big of an issue I do not thing. Then there are two different trails by me one has some small hills and the other is the side of a pretty steep mountain (for NJ that is)
that is a good plan, but i would try to get comfortable running at least 5 miles. this race is tough. not to say it can't be done, but it is tough.
the trail itself is an obstacle that doesn't end. the hills are seemingly straight up. you need a lot a lot of endurance to conquor them. and there is no way to really jog up them. you either need to sprint up them or walk up to make it. i'm not ashamed to say that i started walking up them about halfway through the race.
and the downhills are the same. you either go down them by baby steps, or sprint down them. neither keeps you safe from falling and tripping.
Thanks Danny... this is just the start of my plan! LOL are you coming to join us?0 -

Yep...I tried both....I fell during both...though I was the first one down the mountain.

Sara and I are going to be training on some hilly trains in Van Cortlandt Park. Anyone in the NYC area is welcome to join.0
