Wow! That felt like Jillian was trying to kill me!

Hi everyone,

I'm new to MFP and I've just started back on the journey to a healthier lifestyle, so when I saw that there was a group doing 30DS in December, it seemed like perfect timing.

I've just stumbled through level 1 (with modifications) and it damn-near killed me! It's just like I remember it last time I tried it. I had to sit down for 20 minutes afterwards because I felt like I was going to throw up or faint. I didn't actually die, so that was a good thing, but I felt like I wanted to!

I was looking forward (not sure that's the right phrase) to persevering this time and doing the full 30 days, but I'm not sure I can make it through 30 days of level 1, let alone progressing to the higher levels. Maybe I should start by doing it every couple of days and doing some walking or cycling on the other days. I know I'm completely out of shape and I've never been active or sporty, so I'm perfectly happy to accept that I'm the biggest wuss ever and that I'm probably trying to be too ambitious to start with.

Either way, I want to maintain a reasonable diet/calorie deficit and undo the 10 pounds I've gained back (I lost about 45 pounds a couple of years ago and then gained 10 back over the next year and seem to have been holding steady for the last year or so). After getting back to where I was, I want to lose another 25 pounds which should put me at the upper end of normal as far as BMI goes.

If anyone has any tips, suggestions or just messages of support, it would be most welcome. I look forward to the journey ahead and having people to share the experience with (assuming Jillian doesn't kill me in the process).

Normally you do 10 days of each level!!! You don't necessarily have to do it that way which ever works for you!!!

You just have to go at your own pace. Listen to your body if it tells you to stop then stop. You don't want to get hurt!!!
You'll get to your goal just stick through it! =)

To be honest, I started working out in January to "un-couch-potato" myself, and I feel like I'm SO glad I did. I would not have been able to keep up level 1 without that prior buildup because I was so out of shape.
That feeling like you're gonna die gets less severe and frequent! The almost-puke moments are tough, though!
  • Thanks to both of you for taking the time to reply and for being so encouraging.

I took a break on Wednesday and just did level one of the Gorilla Workout iOS app instead. I was a bit tight and achy but not too bad, so I thought I'd give 30DS level one another go and I actually got through the whole level with just a couple of 5-second breathers! I was hot and sweaty and my heart was certainly beating, but I didn't feel sick or faint at all this time. I actually felt pretty exhilarated! Is this the endorphin rush that everyone who enjoys working out is always on about? I certainly like that better than the other feeling.

Here's hoping that I'm not too sore tomorrow and I'll do another session. I might even get to the point where enjoy working out.

Good for you! For the first few days, I had a few 5-second breathers too. It does get better. I usually get a bit of a rush a few minutes after I've stopped (and caught my breath) but not really during,.. but that's what it sounds like to me! Plus, the good feeling that comes with having actually made it through is good!

I get high after I do the 30D. I'll stay that way for like 30 minutes too lol.
