I think in this case, your boss was being an assface. Some guy comes up and says how he digs your body type and your boss has the audacity to LAUGH, call HIM rude and then continuously bring it up? The hell??

    Janie,

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. ~Eleanor Roosevelt

As you have mentioned yourself..this is much more to do with your own confidence and self-perception than any exterior force.
You are extremely attractive (and Carl has verified this live!), have a boyfriend who sounds absolutely fantastic, a great career, are physically capable enough to do the Tough Mudder and excel in your fitness testing.

I am jealous and kind of hate you! I have NONE of those things going for me.

So you gained a whole bunch of weight. It happens. So men are insensitive and act surprised that you are physically capable. It happens. So you have been complimented on your body in a very specific way. It happens.

YOU have a choice of how do deal with all of this. You get to decide whether to feed into your shame, fear or dislike of your body...or not. This starts with you.

And let me just say, I am also personally shocked that any person can run as far as you, be as physically active and tough enough to do the Tough Mudder, man or woman. I certainly can't even dream of that right now.

I’ve been doing CrossFit + Zumba 5 days a week + running 10-12 miles (total) a week for the 3 weeks I’ve been here and STILL have lost only 3 pounds and no noticeable change in uniform fit.

Firstly, are you tracking your food?

Secondly, your body always takes time to get used to a new regime. 1 to 5 weeks usually, depending on how much you're tearing up your muscles! (micro rips, that store water, that's the prob)

I'm in the same position at the moment (gained 1lb) but I know that my body is just in repair, as I've done this before. The lovely PJ reminded me of this when I moaned at her about it!! Will get the link for you.........

The scales will start to move again - we need to be patient :flowerforyou:

Sometimes men will do/say stuff just to get a reaction out of you. I do this to co-workers, friends, and even strangers (if the opportunity presents itself). People are able to size you up in a split second and they know how to get under your skin. They don't need fling insults, they can simply make a comment, like "you look great for a woman of your size" or something along those lines. They might think it's funny to get you going.. or maybe they are genuinely trying to piss you off. Regardless, it's time to thicken that skin up a little.

If the number on the scale is so bothersome, then you should do something about it. You say that you can run 13 miles and have all these other physical fitness accolades.. dropping those last 20-30 pounds shouldn't be too tough.

I hate to say it Anna, but that generally isn't true. Usually when you completely mix up your workout routine, your body will react very positively to it. It's when you keep the same routine week in and week out, your body will be accustom to it and you won't see good results.

I've mixed up my cardio and weight training and have seen some excellent results recently.

Wow. Thanks. I feel so incredibly inspired. Yep those last 30 pounds shouldn't be tough at all. Espescially since they're 10 pounds heavier than when I started MFP. I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, but I hear in my head one guy saying just stop eating all those donuts fatty (I don't even EAT donuts anymore- maybe 2 a year).

@Anna, yes I log my food (sometimes here, but most of of my food tracking is on slips of paper in my hotel room waiting to be transferred here). Like I said in my other post that's an area I need to work on. I don't eat a ton of junk because it breaks me out, but I do consume more calories than I should just by virtue of living out of a suitcase. I'm taking steps to change that.

I think it would be fun to turn single peeps into a drinking game. Girls post topics and every time DM or Mike says something unintentionally dumb/rude/asshattery-to-the-max we all take a shot!

I'm free on Friday! Anyone want to play with me?

Well, the article was written by a Chalean Johnson, the trainer behind Turbo Fire. I would imagine she did a few tests in order to make the claims. As as I said, when I did P90X before, it took 5 weeks for me to drop on the scales.

Perhaps you're just fitter than the rest of us and therefore your muscles dont get stressed?......I dunno! We are all different. And there are many variables.

but you missed my point. ability to run and weight are not always inter related. people that are over weight can sometimes run, faster or better than people that aren't over weight but aren't runners. hence, my example of my friend that is over weight but runs 6 mi every other day or so. she does marathons, and half marathons, etc. but shes bigger than i am.

i however, am NOT a runner. i'd rather lift weights than run. so, i would be stronger and be able to help with things like lifting, but i run for cr@p.

so, for someone to be make a comment that at her weight she shouldn't be able to run, is actually inaccurate. now, they could say that to me, and i would agree, but that's because i don't run. even if i were 120 lbs i would still suck at running!!!!! :-)
those guys were rude! it's none of their biz what you weigh or how your weight affects your ability to run.

They are going to deploy together as part of a military unit...it absolutely is there business how much she weighs and how fast and far she can run.

I don't drink but I can get YOU drunk.
And I'll eat a spoonful of ice cream every time. I might put on a few hundred pounds, but it should be really easy to drop, of course.

  • Janie, I think you are a pretty amazing person. It's really sad to me that a woman who is stunning, intelligent and confident in so many ways is brought up so short by some insensitive comments some jerk(s) makes to you. I mean, you have this awesome boyfriend who obviously thinks you're hot, so why not start listening to him rather than someone who has an opinion that really doesn't matter?

I can't say I don't understand where you're coming from. I've had similar issues my whole life. However, over the past year, several things have come together to make me realize that other people's perception of my beauty makes absolutely no difference to me. In my case, I'm intelligent, fun to be around (trust me, I don't translate well into internet land lol), have an amazing voice that just keeps getting better, and there is so much more I could list, but I won't since I don't want to sound arrogant. I know you have many incredible qualities too. Maybe start focusing on those? I think it will help a lot :flowerforyou:

Well, 23 pounds in two months is a lot of weight, fast... I think this goes beyond German Brötchen. I sympathize with your situation, but I'm sure you're not surprised that you're getting digs from others now, especially Marines. I'm not military, but I've heard there is a snobbish component to the Marines, especially in regards to the Air Force. And you showing up 23 pounds heavier for a new assignment - one you requested, I assume, so you were aware you'd be working with Marines - was fuel to their fire. A confirmation of their stereotypes about Air Force.

If you were a pilot or a flight attendant for Delta, I'd say your colleagues were being rude and insensitive. But this is the military, where you are being paid by taxpayers to stay in shape. At least that is the culture. I have to agree with Mike here. It's time to cut back on the food and drop that weight.

I realize it's harder for women than men. And most men typically don't understand this. So we assume you can just do what we do, cut back on the food and exercise more, and the weight falls off. In theory it should work, but women store fat differently, women's bodies are more complex, hormones play a greater role, fat is more stubborn. For whatever reason, weight loss is harder for women.

Still, having said all of that, you chose your career, you chose this assignment, you chose to overeat while on break. Posting here or crying about it isn't going to get you any sympathy with the people that now matter, the people you will be working with for the next six months. Quite the opposite, in fact.
