Does anyone else go all day without eating?

Hi, my name is Jennifer:smile: . I just want to know if anyone else has my problem. I get up, take my synthroid and wait my hour to take my other meds. Then I go downstairs and have a cup of coffee. I get busy doing other things like housework or stuff on the computer. Then it will be like 3:30 in the afternoon and I will not have eaten anything. This is how I got the size I am now:sad: . I really do try to make an effort to make myself eat, but it seems like I am never or hardly ever hungry. most of the time I will literally eat 1 meal a day (the supper I fix for the family).

Does anyone else have this problem:huh: ? Could it be related to my hypothyroidism:frown: ? Opinions, please and thank you for your response:flowerforyou:

I don't know if it's thyroid related, but I have several relatives who literally never feel hungry. They just don't, and when it is time to eat, they don't eat that much. I would either set a specific schedule to eat so that you don't forget, or I would arrange to eat at least one other meal with some member of your family.
  • Also, you could use healthy high calorie foods to bump up your calorie allowance like almonds, avocados and things like that. I've read that not eating enough can really wreak havoc on your metabolism.

I have the opposite problem... it is hard for me to stop eating. I just nibble all day if I am not paying attention.

I do believe it can be a thyroid issue, because your hormones affect your appetite. I don't understand all the chemistry behind it, but there are a lot of people out there that miss meals like that, and then end up feeling like crap. My husband does that. He doesn't eat breakfast or lunch on weekdays, and then by 4pm, he's enraged with hunger. If I'm around, such as on the weekends, I will cook and he will eat because I am, but if I don't feed him, he won't eat until he's so hungry he's lost his temper.

I certainly know that I have the "thrifty" gene and I do gain weight when I don't eat. Sometimes substantially gain weight. It is my old pattern of behavior. It just seems like it is so easy for me to not care and not eat. Even when I make that my goal of the day, I very frequently reach anywhere close to my calorie goal. I REALLY need to work harder at this. Even after posting this today, I didn't eat breakfast till after 2 in the afternoon:noway: .

I think I need a 1 step program or something. I have never been good at regular eating. I even bought breakfast sandwich things to try and force myself to eat breakfast. I am working at it, but not doing enough obviously.

Thank you for your comments:flowerforyou:

I am pretty much like this but it's a matter of teaching your system and yourself when it's time to eat. I rarely have ever felt true hunger, but i got overweight because i did love food and loved high fat and sugary foods. The more junk the better. And i didn't learn when to stop because when i felt my stomach full i had gone overboard already.
Use mfp for tracking your intake and have a schedule. We all have to do this regardless of feeling hunger or not. Set a time for each meal of the day and try to stick to it.
Yes, not eating at all and having one meal a day can slow down your metablism too much for it to work properly towards a weightloss goal (your body learns it has to hold on to the food instead of teaching it not to store fat)

In your case i would talk to my doctor about the thyroid issue and your weight gain because if you don't eat that much the body can't hold on to a fat that wasn't there on your plate in the first place.
You definitely need a healthier eating schedule. You might still not feel hunger but you'll feel you have more energy and strenght throughout the day.

    Good luck!
  • It's so good to know that there are others like me out thereI! have been hypo since I was 20, now 54.
My usual is to have a cup of coffee in the morning, then I'll take a couple pieces of fruit and a container of yogurt or something with me to work for breakfast and lunch and......at the end of the day, it's still there. I either forget or I'm just not hungry. My only meal is usually supper and a small snack at night. I know I don't drink as much water as I should, trying to remedy that. My weight has kept crawling up and up and up, and when I tell my doctors that I hardly eat, they look at me like. "Uh huh. Right."
I just found a weight loss doctor who has me on a 1200 calorie diet with weekly HCG and B-12 injections. This has to work, I have tried every diet and they never work for me. It's just so nice to know I'm not alone...

    Hi there,
I can relate to the non-eating.. I know this sounds silly but im afraid to eat cause I gain easy and it seems no matter what I eat I gain.. I have suffered anorexia and im on wellbutrin for depression. Im only on 50mcgs and thats very low and I don' t have the thyroid gland, I was born without it. I hope you find what works for you and you can have relief
  • I relate to this too, I'm on 150mcg and don't seem to loose weight easily. I also suffered from anorexia in my teens after being diagnosed I think for fear of getting big! I have to make myself eat some days but others I can gorge, its a battle. I am trying to eat nuts as a cal boost.

    Good luck!

This is an interesting anecdotal pool! I, too, suffered from anorexia (both before and after having my thyroid removed at 13). I generally have a hard time eating before the end of the day... I just tend not to be hungry, function well without food during the day. I wonder if there is some connection to many of us being hypo and not feeling as hungry during the day? I'm actually experimenting with IF, just because it seems like I've followed an eating pattern like that all my life (though, this time, I'll be eating more than a 200 calorie dinner!).

I rarely feel hunger. During work days my breaks cue me to eat. Lunch time - time to eat. 5PM - time to eat. But when I'm at home with no break times to cue, I end up not eating until very, very late in the day and then I'm satisfied with one meal.

This has only become a problem now that I don't mindlessly snack. I used to eat to deal with emotions. I don't do that anymore... and it's become a problem because that means I don't eat. Period.

    *sigh*

Thanks everyone for your responses. It helps to know that I am not alone. I am trying and have been doing some better. It's just a battle to wage everyday...but I'm slowly winning the war.
