I'm slow too. I dont know my time for a mile but I'm gonna time it wed when I go to the track. I just did my first 5k a week ago and I had to walk part of it (I'm only on wk 5 of c25k so that was a practice 5k) and I finished it in 54:30. Today I finished the dreaded w5d3 dun dun dun 20 minutes jogging with no walk breaks. I did it! In fact, after walking for about 5 mins I ran a bonus 10 mins! Speed will come in time, I'm sure. Hang in there.0

14 minute miles would be 43ish minutes actually Don't worry - first, even if you somehow DID come last...so what? You're not out there to beat people, you're out there to improve yourself. And second, in a 5K you won't be the last one anyway - there are always 5K walkers.0 -
ya true did the math and felt better when I realized It wouldnt take forever to finish it
as my hubby said I am running faster than my teens who wond leave the couch to run with me (he wont either so I am faster than him)0 -
One question. Does your 14 minute mile include your warm up & cool down? If so? Who cares!
My mom just did her first 5k on Thanksgiving. She's 66... and ran/walked it in 65 minutes. My marathoner brother who did it with her said "Hey, you did it faster than your age! That's excellent!" He's so cute!
So, my goal is to run my first 5k all the way through, and in under 35 minutes (I'm 35). This would be just under an 11:30 mile... and I'm currently running at between a 12-13 min mile. I'm just now up to 30 minutes running straight, so over the next few weeks I'll be training up to 40 minutes running, and then starting to work on speed.
My husband is super encouraging. He says that my 12-13 min pace is on the top end of a respectible marathon pace (under 5.5 hours), and for me being 214 right now I'm thrilled with that.0 -
thanks to all of you I am feeling better about this
still nervous though its my first race
have been training outside, figured if I am going to be running races might as well get used to
the great outdoors im in canada ottawa area and it can get pritty cold here0 -
I found the organisers/marshalls etc at my first run last weekend to be super encouraging and one of the front runners even doubled back to finish with us at the back of the pack ( I think he was still cooling down from his 10k the day before). I recommend putting it out there right from the start that it is your first 5k and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the support.
Wear layers in that chill. You're braver than I going out in it.... and good luck0 -
Hey I like that idea, running faster than my age !! Haha
I am consistently at about a 12 minute mile. Slow, but working on it. It may be a marathon pace, but since they are running 8 times further that doesn't really make me feel better. Haha
You are doing great !!0 -
Running faster than your age...hmm, sounds like a goal for next year. I've been trying to find a new motivator to get back on the road, this may be it as I will be 26 in a few months. My first 5k time back in October was 35:04. BTW OP, I don't know your running history, but running a 14 minute mile is quite impressive, in high school, I would nearly die during the physical fitness test and usually come in around 13 or 14 minutes. Thanks for posting!!!0
