Well I was diagnosed type 2 in September....test results received from july AC1 test .
Then my results were 8.4
Today my results are 6.0
and we'll test again in 3 months.
Today I learned that my doc doesn't believe in removing people off of metformin. She thinks that in 3 months time I could go back up and then I'd start panicking and we'd have to start over.
I asked specifically what numbers do you need to see to remove me off metformin. She said 5 would be great, but even at that she's about ensuring that we have prevent in place to slow down the progression of the disease as much as possible.
Additionally Metformin doesn't allow for spikes in blood sugar, which she thinks is good for me. By the way I'm only on 500 mg split 250/250 once a day.
additionally....there's still work that I need to do in terms of managiing my stress levels.
While on metformin, I've cut carbs, processed foods, sugars (compared to where I started) and sent many of you emails asking questions and I wish to express my sincere appreciation for all of those who responded.
Looks like there's still more to cut and that I need to move more (exercise more)....perhaps if i bump that up maybe in March well see that magic number 5.
I'm thankful that the numbers are going down. I'm thankful for the low doesage of metformin that I'm on and having been able to lose weight and get a better control of the sugar. I do, however, realize that there is more work to to be done.
Again, thank you all for sharing your stories and for your support.

Good job getting that number down! I have my first ac1 since being diagnosed next month and would also like to hit that magic 5.0

Great job getting things under control. 5 seems to be the magic number, because that is what my Dr told me as well. I take 500mg of Metformin twice a day and my A1C has gone from 7.6 in May to 6.3 in Nov. FitnessPal has been a great help in getting my weight down and also getting in some exercise ( Which I am SOOO lazy about )
Congrats on your victory and keep up the good work0 -
That is excellent progress.
I am interested in your comment (and mluanne's comment) about the Dr saying you need to get to 5 before coming of Metformin. Is that 5.0 or basically under 6.0?
Reason I ask is my Dr never put me on Metformin even when I was diagnosed at 9.1!!! (3 months ago) I am wondering if this reflects UK VS US Dr's views on the disease.
Once again great result.0 -
Great progress!
The magic number for my doctor is 5.6. He took me off Metformin when my after testing 5.1 once, and then testing at 5.1 again six months later. He told me that as long as I kept my A1C at 5.6 or below, I could stay off the Meformin, but the first time I went above he'd be ordering me to resume taking it.
I can see why some doctors would want you to stay on, for the control of the after meal spikes alone. While my fasting and before meal numbers have stayed pretty much the same since coming off the Metformin, my post meal numbers have risen. They are still within an acceptable range for the most part, but they are definitely 10-20 points higher than they were when I was on Metformin. I'm hoping those increase don't raise my next A1C results too much, but we'll see.0 -
Thanks for the words of encouragement everyone.

I had to remind myself that staying on Metformin, for protection, is not necessarily a bad thing, but I have to admit that I was looking forward to coming off of it.
I've read that it is the test should be lower than 5.7....to be Normal....5.7 is prediabetes....
Now she didn't say that.... I read that.
She just wants me to stay safe and to push the disease back as long as possible and if Metformin is doing it than she wants me to stay on it.
She reminded me .... lots of patients are on insulin and a lot higher dosage of Metformin than I am. She told me to take heart in my success and being able to achieve this by taking 250/250 (1 pill 1/2 in am and 1/2 in evening.)
Plus.... I'm still losing weight... about a 1lb or a little more every week.....
So we'll she what how that adds up in 3 months....I should hit MFP's ideal BMI by them.

My Dr told me if I can get under 6 (did give any specific #) then we can try to go off Metformin (500 x2). My August a1c was 6.5 as was my December so a moot point right now.
Next appt is in March, am hoping it will at least drop something, but at least the weight is decreasing and by March hoping to drop even more .
Thankfully I don't have any side effects from the Metformin so not really mind taking it, but would love to not have to take as many pills as I do each day (HTN 2, Chol 2, DM the Metformin and some other meds/vitamins).0
