Has anyone stopped the hairloss?

Hi everyone!

has anyone seen the hairloss stalled for good with treatment?
My levels test is in a few days, my hairloss is one thing i would like to have stopped, and my doctor seems to think it will be there forever, even with the correct treatment (no, i can't switch to another doctor, this is the national health system, and even if they think you should get a different treatment there are protocols they have to stick to)

So, I'm curious, in case i have to confront her i would like to know if there are others who actually have seen success with this symptom.
thanks!

I had a little bit of hairloss when my hypo symptoms were at their worst. It wasn't enough for anyone to notice other than me, but I felt like I had hairballs all over my clothes all the time.

My levels are good and stable now, and my hair is as thick as it has ever been. My hair is pretty thick as it is, so when I lose half of it, I still have plenty left...

So, once you deal with the problems of the hormones, the hair does grow back... at least for me it did.

In the mean time, find some cute hats and scarves and rock them! I hope you find relief soon.

    Hi there-

I had RAI 7 weeks ago as I was Hyper. Hair would come out in clumps. Now that my numbers are dropping, I barely see any hair fall out except for the "normal" hair or two most people do with any thyroid issues. I have been pleased with the results of my RAI.

Hope you start feeling better! I'm no expert on the hairloss issue, but hope it will stop eventually for you.

I am growing new hair now since I've been treated. :) I am absolutely happy for that so yes, there is light at the end of tunnel. My hair is curly so at the moment when I pull my hair back I have all these little hairs coming out of place because they are still too short to lie down in a ponytail. I love it though. Couldn't be happier to have new baby hair making its way to a full head of curls. Additionally my hair is no longer falling out in clumps whenever I brush it.
A few strands come out but not a ton like it was before treatment. Thank God for pig hormones.

Thank you all!!! Your replies are very helpful :)

I hope i can get my hair problem solved soon. I don't know if it's all due to my hypo though. I hope my GP takes me seriously for once ;(

I had a lot of hair loss with my anti thyroid meds and also some when I was hyper thyroid. I asked my dermatologist what I could do and he said "rogain for men" would help. I looked at all of the side effects and decided to go with less hair. I'm not happy, but at least is covers my head, just not as thick as when I was younger and in good health.

If your doctor does not take you serious then you might think about getting a second opinion with a well researched doc who is open-minded. No good doctor would dismiss your symptoms like that.

Nope, sorry that's impossible with the spanish health system. I'm still going to try to get my GP to take me seriously but she has to stick to certain procedures, policies and protocols and even if she takes my hairloss seriously she won't give me the correct treatment. She just limits herself to check the TSH and change the levothyroxine according to the yearly lab tests. And she will make me take a couple of extra tests if she changes my dose. That's the best she's allowed to do. ;( and I can't afford private insurance right now :(

Edited: i hit the publish button before finishing. I wanted to say thank you so much for your reply :)

I still think she is totally mismanaging your thyroid. Can you pay out of pocket for additional tests?

Thyroid related hair loss stops when your thyroid is properly managed.

I totally agree. I had to pay for my own care too. The doctors under my insurance were not open minded enough to treat me properly. I had to pay out of pocket for my care. I travelled 2-3 hours from my home to a nurse practitioner to get treated. She charged me for one visit and now she treats me virtually. I don't have to visit her office. She mails me the lab slip, I get my lab done and the results are then sent to her. From her office she mails me a new script with the same or different dosage depending on my lab results. I don't have to visit her again unless she deems necessary but it isn't likely.

It is worth the time and investment if you need to feel better. It sounds like your doctor (divacat) is legally restricted with guidelines in the way that she treats so it seems like even if you "talk" to her she can't. At least try to find out if she can treat you with natural hormones instead of the chemical based thyroid meds.

Hi all - I have Hashi's so experience both hyper and hypo (currently hypo on Cytomel). I have long hair and there was a time that it was coming out in clumps - scared to wash my hair!

I increased my intake of specific supplements - eg. silica, B complex (mainly to get Biotin) - and used hair oil before shampoo (Horsetail is popular but I switched it up with amla, coconut oil, and plain old olive oil). While it may not have stopped thyroid related loss, it helped to prevent loss due to nutritional factors, and the hair oil made what I had thicker, shinier and more healthy, and helped with breakoff fly-aways.

    Good luck!

    I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis/Hypothyroidism.

I've always had long and thick hair, except for a few years ago. My hair broke off to my shoulders (everyone thought I cut it) and it was thin.. I was absolutely devastated.

As you can tell in my main pic, my long pretty hair is back.

I started taking vitamins... Vitamin B something (drawing a blank)... and prenatals (I became pregnant around that time.. but at the end of my pregnancy, my hair was still awful looking). I also would go days without blow drying or straightening my hair.

Okay, I'm not a black woman (obviously) but I invested in black woman products because it was the ONLY thing I never tried. The one I still currently use is in a pink bottle called Motions (I found it at Walmart) I used a little everyday and I swear by it. I also use conditioners that have Rosemary and mint in it.

During the time of my hair falling out, my thyroid was stable and under control. It can happen, but we can always try other things to try and help it.

I've also noticed since I've been eating healthier, my hair looks even more amazing now.

I wish you all the best of luck! :-)

Thank you all for your advice!!!
No, I can't pay for additional tests, I mean, I could do it all through private services but then my GP wouldn't treat my thyroid anymore. And of course I can't afford such long private treatments right now, but I hope to be able to do that in the near future.

I'll talk to my doctor about the natural thyroid treatment but I dare to bet she doesn't know a thing about it.

I'll talk to her about the vitamins supplements.

    Thank you all! ;(

My dr. said the same thing only one blood test per year for thyroid problems. I have insurance. If the doctor is trying to monitor if the dosage is correct and you are still having thyroid issues, wouldn't it be a good idea to have your thyroid tested again after you have been on the medication for a period of time (maybe 2 months)? Its rediculous to wait an entire year to find out this important information.

My thyroid issues are bad, so I am trying a couple of things on my own. I went to my supplement/organic store and requested assistance. The other lady had thyroid problems also. I am trying Newton homeopathics, Thyroid Assist (iodium, etc.) and Kelp from Nova Scotia and Pacific (natural iodine dietary supplement). Also I have heard coconut oil is suppose to increase metabolism. I have lost weight and feel better.

    Hi,
I take Evening Primrose oil for hair-loss. Am also still regulating my meds. But it should be noted, that not only is hair loss a symptom of both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, it can also be a side effect of thyroid meds. :noway: So, we've got lots of risks for it.
Stopthethyroidmadness.com has loads of information on just about everything. It will also give you some guidelines to figuring out if your thyroid is being regulated or not, if you can't get tested often enough. The temperature test is quite easy to do.

I would actually be careful with the iodine and kelp products. There's evidence that people who are hypothyroid but NOT iodine deficient can actually be made more hypothyroid by adding iodine supplements. People at supplement stores only know that iodine and thyroids are linked. And while it's true that low iodine can cause/exacerbate thyroid issues, you first need to know if your particular thyroid issues are caused by low iodine - it's a simple blood test to find out.

I would actually be more concerned with testing and supplementing things like Selenium, Vit D, iron, ferritin, and Vit B12. All of these are required for proper thyroid function, primarily for converting T4 into T3, and for T3 to act at the cellular level.

Totally agree, I would never wait a year for lab results! I get labs every 4-6 weeks after a dose change.
