Hi there,

So I'm 7 weeks into RAI, feeling alot better but noticed lately I have no appetite at all!!! I still make myself eat, but its a chore now. My last test results show that my Free T4 levels went down by .5, just had another test done today and am waiting for results. At what point will they put me on meds? Should I be losing my appetite?

Before RAI (10/31)
TSH= <0.01
Free T4= 2.3 (0.8 to 1.7)
Total T3, not done

11/27
TSH=<0.01
Free T4= 1.8 (0.8 to 1.7)
Total T3= 161 (50 to 170)

Thanks for the help!
Wendy

    I have no idea at what point your doctor will put you on medication. Currently your thyroid hormone levels fall within normal range and your TSH is still quite low. The doc may be waiting to see that rebound. I would expect your appetite to decrease as part of hyperthyroidism is a ravenous appetite (sometimes I miss those days of out eating football players AND losing weight). You should really be paying attention to other signs that you may need supplementation such as lethargy, weight gain, hair loss, poor skin, always being cold, etc. I always think it is more important how you feel than what your numbers say.

    Thanks! My lethargy has gotten better, I am no longer sweating all the time, but now I'm cold (but that was always normal for me before becoming hyper), my skin is fine and my hair no longer comes out in clumps! My weight is steady, after the initial loss, I am now loosing maybe 1/2 pound every week or so, but no weight gain.

    Ok, so the total T3 test is not very helpful. 95-99.9% of your T3 is bound to carrier proteins and not usable by your body. The total T3 test includes these bound T3 hormones. You want to ask for the "free T3" test, as this is JUST the amount free and usable by your body. Your total T3 can be all over the place depending on things like estrogen levels, so you need to know that free T3.

    When are your next labs? I'd want them done at least every 2-4 weeks as you might need meds soon. Your TSH is still pretty low so your body isn't releasing much T4...

    Based on this I'm wondering if you have both graves and hashi's, and were hypothyroid before. I think you need that free T3 tested as I suspect you're already going hypo. Being cold all the time is a classic hypo symptom.

    Are they still testing your antibodies? I'd ask for them to be tested. And definitely ask for the free T3 test!!!
