Hope you have all had a brilliant Christmas.
I just wanted to ask a question to all those who have lost weight.
I was told many years ago, that if I lose weight, my symptoms will lessen. The last two times I went to 15st (210lbs) which is the smallest I have ever really been, I didn't see a change. Especially in the Hirsutism (excess hair). I am aiming for 180lbs now, but I don't know if it will actually change anything.

I would be grateful for any advice. Living in the UK so getting Metformin is out of the question for me as I am NOT trying to conceive xx Thank you x

Hi there, at my highest weight I was about 195ish (13st), I say "ish" because I never got on a scale at that time. But from the pictures I have, I was no doubt pretty close to 200 at 5'3".Also, I am not on Metformin, if that's relevant at all, only birth control. Anyway, I have managed to get down to 159 (11st) and I have to say my symptoms have indeed somewhat lessened.

I feel a bit better about myself and I used to have a LOT of skin issues from my PCOS as well as other pain in the *kitten* issues that come with it. While the skin issues haven't gone away completely, it has gotten much better with my weight loss. As far as Hirsutism it has almost gone away completely (although I do have an occasional odd hair somewhere). I'm sure you've heard this before but every woman with PCOS is different, some need to lose more then others to see an improvement and others not so much. For me, I didn't start seeing any change in my symptoms until I got down to the low 160's. But don't give up, we're all with you in your struggles! Good luck to you dear!

    Hi there,
I have PCOS and although I do not intend to have children I used to find the issues it brings about quite heartbreaking. I found that I was unable to apply myself to not giving in to the increase appetite so was always gaining weight and the hair has to be the worst as lets face it no girl wants to live with that.
I am 5"9 and started at 185lbs, 13st 3 and a 14/16 about 6 months ago. I have found that going down to 152 (aiming at 150) has seen a big reduction in my hair issues, not gone but a lot better. I also feel so much better in myself and in a 10/12 shopping and mirrors are more fun. I have a much better control on my diet now with the main thing just thinking about whether I need to eat things.
If you aren't trying to conceive have you considered taking Dianette which is a contraceptive pill that helps out with a lot of the PCOS evil bits like the skin and the hair. Many doctors will only let you take it for a few months but it worked for me.

In terms of how much you need to loose to make a difference it's probably hard to say. I was classed as overweight (BMI wise although I don't usually stick with that) and have gone into the healthy weight bracket. I would guess you probably need to do similar to feel the benefits!
Totally worth it though and I wish you all the luck in the world
