Great job everyone - 3 rides over 100KM is brilliant!! So close there TBY - so close, just pipped by 1km !!!
I'm a bit gutted as also won't be able to ride 24/3 (family christening which I'd really rather not go to to be honest but my mum wouldn't be amused), and 31/3 is Easter Sunday but also my goddaughter's birthday and they're having a party. I really am going to have to do something spectacular on 17th March to get myself on this blummin leaderboard!!!0 -
Congratulations Harksey on first place and to TheBigYin and Cloggsy for the Metric Century. Well done fellas. Nice ride everyone, I hope the weather is better on the 17th.0
-
Glad everyone's enjoying it so far - i'd just like to add, the entry rosta isn't closed - feel free to signup for the rest of the challenge or dragoon your friends along - and you can dip in and out as needed - no pressure or requirement to commit to the entire schedule - i'm not 100% convinced I'll be able to make it for all the stages myself...0
-
My 1st win !!! cheers guys
although in a real race cloggsy would have romped it with an amazing 18.6 mph average0 -
Well done everyone. Sorry i've been off the radar last few days. Had a head cold this weekend, but was desparate enough to at least do 10 miles to break the Nemesis in. Hopefully I'll be able to mix things up a bit on the next ride. I have 75kms in my legs, so might have a bash at the metric century myself.0

Fortunately, via strava-stalking you (just kidding) I spotted you'd done the break-in ride on saturday, so I dropped it into the mix for this event. So, even with a nice little shakdown spin, you netted yourself 4 points :drinker:

...not necessarily - check out the elevation figures from me and cloggsy - (344m for me, 395 for cloggsy and 945m from you...) - add in those hills and he may have been slowed a little - and I can guarantee I'd have slowed a LOT!
Still - I'm happy with my speed on this ride - not bad at all for riding solo - I managed to take 5 minutes out of my time from 2 weeks before, and I was riding with a mate that day!0 -
Hi all... not a century cyclist just yet, but your challenges look so fun, I thought I'd join anyway
Please sign me up for the next ride... I'm glad it starts on the 17th, as I'm currently participating in the Strava/Giro's Train Like Taylor challenge (32 hours in 16 days) which ends on the 16th
See you all on the virtual road!0 -

Okay - I've decided on the Milan-Sanremo "bonus points"
Again 3 possibilities this week
- First one is related to the nickname "La Primavera" - so 1 bonus point for a mid-ride photo showing "signs of spring" (daffodils/snowdrops/catkins/newborn lambs etc. - NOT your MTB's suspension)
- Second, just to piss all over the healthy aspect of this fitness site - 1 point for either a "bottle of Peroni recovery drink shot" de OR a "cafe break shot with coffee/cakes/biscotti as appropriate" taken mid-ride.
Images should by preference have EXIF data present to verify timestamps, and the mid-ride photos should be geotagged to check they match up with the ride in time and location.
- Third - and this is the big 5 pointer (so damned difficult to get) - is time related. The Milan Sanremo is the longest distance race in the series, and it's a long time in the saddle even for the pro's. So - here we go - anyone who spends more "moving time" (i.e. not counting cafe breaks, photo-calls or stopping mid ride for 7 hours for a sleep!) in their single ride gets a 5 point bonus.
Personally, I may try for the photo-proofs this ride, but with the weather forecast as it's looking at the moment, even if they run at a record speed there's NO WAY i'll be out for 6h20m+ of rain/sleet...0 -
Performed a GPS reset on my phone. Hope it will behave on Sunday :smokin:
Testing driving it today (expect the tracking will be perfect, as it only misbehave when I really need it LOL!)0 -
Just over 2 hours until I open the Entries thread for the next instalment of the Classics Cycling Challenge.
Once the entries thread is open, the start list is finalised, and nobody else can sign up to the challenge for this week.
There's at least one person who's PM'ed me about joining the challenge, but who hasn't signed up in the thread yet. Time's running out - no sign on, no points for this week.
Everyone who's name is on this image -
- are automatically entered for the rest of the challenges.
Edit: thread now opened, no further signups made.0 -
Long range forecast for next week's challenge!0
-
Yep - Ghent-Wevelghem's gonna be a corker here too...
Who's bloody silly idea was this challenge anyway.....
oh-yeah - i'll get me coat!0 -
just reading through the submissions thread, looking at the ride reports and photo's, whilst enjoying the rest of my "recovery peroni's" and I don't know if it's the rare exposure to alcohol, or the residual endorphins from hammering myself for 4 hours earlier today, but...
I'm getting a really, really WIDE GRIN on my face - realizing that this crazy idea of dragging 10-15 or more like minded idiots out on their bikes in thoroughly unsuitable weather, and performing random themed tasks (riding a dirt road on a roadbike, photographing snowdrops and daffodils WTF!!), then ruining all their hard work by drinking beer and eating biscotti with their coffee has actually fired your imagination and motivated you to get out there...
though - as a good friend said to me.... "if you build it, they will come...."
thank you all for getting onboard - it's been a gas so far, and can only improve (and so, hopefully, will the weather...)0 -
Thanks for organising it TBY - made me go out of my way to make time to ride, and it was fun looking out for signs of Spring and stopping randomly to take photos!!! Sadly, I wasn't organised enough to buy some Peroni in - probably better for my calorie intake that I didn't
What I like about it is that although my ride was probably the shortest of everyone's, I still feel included and get a sense of achievement from it.
At a family christening next Sunday, but if I can escape mid afternoon may still be able to get a couple of hours in before it gets dark - here's hoping!!0 -
A positive thing came out from the lost data drama yesterday was my BF finally gave in and said it is time to get a new bike computer. Not that I need his permission or he pays, but he dislikes people to be wasteful and I don't want to upset him - plus I don't want to be wasteful too :ohwell: . The Polar has been good and served me well for nearly 4 years, but the past few months the heart rate sensor & the cadence sensor were often not reading so maybe it is time to shop
I first will need to decide a Garmin or a Polar, then select the model, I think...0 -

I have been running a Garmin Edge 705 for about 5-6 years....just got the Edge 800 last week, with HR / Cadence....really like it so far...only about 150 miles on it but no complaints yet.0 -
Results for the Second section of the Classics Challenge are as Follows:
- Congratulations to cyclenut64, an awfully long ride, especially for the temperatures logged :drinker:
- Me (how the hell did that happen again )
- A Fantastic ride from katozdad - Am I correct in saying this was your longest ride so far ? If so, it's very impressive indeed, Chapeau sir! :drinker:
And once again well done to everyone who got out there and did a ride - and to those who didn't make it - not to worry - one race doesn't make a classics campaign, plenty of time to catch up.
I'd also like to add my personal thanks to all the people who joined in the spirit of things and did the "spot prize" bits - they're a bit of fun, but really help add to the atmosphere, IMO!
So, we've only a brief hiatus now, before we're back on the road in Belgium for the Gent - Wevelgem on Sunday 24th March.
:grumble: Here's hoping the weather improves a bit by then.0 -
Sad... my bike was out of commission getting a new derailleur (I managed to warp mine all the way to the upright position when the chain became jammed on an uphill climb last weekend). Got it back in time for Sunday's challenge but unplanned family obligations kept me out of the saddle :-/.
Looking forward to finally being able to participate in one of these challenges0 -
What is the tradition of Gent - Wevelgem? I need to better prepare for the spot prizes - every point helps :bigsmile:0

I'll drop something into the competition thread by close of play this afternoon...
Edit: done - i'd forgotten i'd actually already compiled a "potted history", so it was just make the header image and cut-and-paste the text...

*crosses fingers* please be hoegaarden!0 -
looking at the route list, it goes over every 'berg in the book apart from this one...
might be something related to "Tripels or Dubbels" - though personally, it may be more likely to be something with a little wider availability like Leffe Blonde...
In ride Photo-Bonus - oooh, I dunno - maybe 1 point for "extreme gradient (1 in 8/12.5% or steeper)" or 2 points for "Extreme Gradient on Cobbles" maybe...0 -
Beer & Cake FTW :drinker:0

Love these spot prizes!!0

Love these spot prizes!!
 you wouldn't believe that this is a challenge run on a "fitness" website, would you :laugh:0 -
Trying desperately to remember where all the cobbled roads are in my area. I know a cobbled path, it is short but the gradient is steep, but it is a mud-bath at the bottom. Think a ride on the MTB this weekend may be in order.0
-
Here's the nearest steepest cobbled street to me, a 20% grade but it leads to a rough area of Swansea;
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=BswlXBX6SRA
Otherwise I'm planning on a longer ride up to 'devils staircase', a 25% gradient in more pleasant surroundings;http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=y-qCNTlFTGM

As far as the cobbled 'bergs, i'm afraid i've got nothing... frankly, my arbitary 1 in 8 or steeper criteria means there's maybe 1 road around here that qualifys, and that hasn't got the obligatory triangular sign on it... instead it's got a "no entry to vehicular traffic" at the bottom - it's around 5 feet wide, and they've made it 1 way - i.e. downhill.0
