    :flowerforyou: Welcome Rodeo,
That seems to be quite common, coming down with it after pregnancy & menopause. Obviously our hormones have something to do with it.
Do you have your symptoms under control on the synthroid?
Hope the group helps you with the support you need.

Hello all. My name is Brian and I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's over the holidays. I guess I'm one of the few lucky men to get it. I feel like a big tin of Charles Chips so thus my screen name. LOL!

The cholesterol and triglyceride levels are also high which is known to be a side affect. :( Major life changes for me to combat some of this. I've cut out all red meat, most dairy and processed foods. I eat a lot of whole foods, vegs, fruits, nuts, tofu and some organic chicken and a little fish. I've also taken up cooking to help out the wife who supports me in so many ways! I currently do not take any synthetic thyroid meds yet.

So thought I join the group and see what other folks with thyroid issues are eating, cooking etc!

Hello, I just joined the group today as we all have a common issue and I think any personal insight will be helpful. I thought regulating my thyroid with synthroid was going to get me back to normal. It hasn't and my dr. isn't any help. I just read some of the websites on foods and your thyroid and to be honest I'm not sure what I should be eating any more. It seems that everything I do is just going to make my condition worse. Thank you to all the people who stated their symptoms ( brittle weak nails, hair loss, achy joints, weight gain, high blood pressure, etc.) is this what we are supposed to live with? I don't like it. I have been gaining weight steadily for over a year now. I know I need a little support.

    Welcome zoo_zie, :flowerforyou:
You're so right, suffering through all the symptoms is not good. Please check out stopthethyroidmadness.com written by those who have thyroid issues & have done the research & found the answers. They lay it out very clearly how to get the help you need from your DR. There's also issues with the adrenals many times that have to be treated to get the thyroid better too, which Dr's tend to ignore...
Hope you get the help you need. I've found that gluten-free, & taking the recommended vitamins, & eating coconut oil have all helped me, along with going to both a Dr & Naturopath for help & advice.

Hello, my name is Sara. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in my teens, as it runs in my family. I'm fairly active, but I still slowly gained weight (even on synthroid) into my 20s, and my thick hair got very very thin. I started lifting, taking vitamins, and watching what I was eating a few years ago, and it seemed that my thyroid was normalizing and hair was coming back a bit. I was on a very low dose to begin with (25mcg), so my doctor advised that I stop taking it. I was really happy, because I was able to lose weight, and got down to 134 lb last Spring.

Then, in Fall, the weight started creeping back up again, though I work out just about every day and eat well, and I noticed I was having more hair loss than usual. In just a few months, my weight was back up to 148. I was put on 50mcg levothyroxin in mid December, then bumped up to 75mcg after test results came back a week later. That seems to have improved things! I'm at 139 lb, and hoping to get below 130 in time for my wedding in October.

Welcome Sara! Congrats on your upcoming wedding :flowerforyou:
Sad about the return of thyroid issues. I hope you read up on stopthethyroidmadness.com
The natural thyroid covers more then the t4, and other issues are involved in "causing" the thyroid problem. Mine was caused by adrenals being low. Dr's tend to just treat the TSH test & not really take care of the cause.
I hope you find the tips & help here that will speed that wt. loss along in time for your wedding. :drinker:

Thanks for the advice and for all the helpful links. I'll take all the information that I can get.
  • Hi everybody. I'm Cara. A little less than a year ago, the doctor found a mass on my thyroid. He took half my thyroid in October (no cancer, thankfully), but since then staying active and on a good diet plan has been very difficult. I'm tired a lot and the urge to eat everything in sight is even worse than it used to be (and it was always bad). So I saw this group and hope it can lead to some support as I try to deal with all these new issues that I have now as a girl with a half a thyroid. :)

    Hi Everyone,
My story- Had a ovarian cyst rupture May 22, 2012. Had a (first time ever) SEVERE Panic Attack! Went to the ER. That day changed my life! I have not been able to get my panic attacks, which is now severe anxiety to go away. I did not know where to turn or what to do, so I went to see my Gyno/OB doc about a week after. She gave me the regular "blah blah blah story"... every woman has cyst ruptures, every woman has hormone fluctuations. I could run hormone tests on you but it won't do any good and you will be wasting your money. (we didn't have insurance but yet had the cash to pay for whatever was needed to be done.. my husband and I just wanted my/our Life to be normal. My husband tried to tell her that it wasn't a mental health issue, that it had to be hormonal. If it was a mental health issue, there would have been signs leading up to it.. this exploded out of nowhere. Before this, I was very independent, took care of our children while he was away every week for work. Loved spending time alone... (who doesn't when they have kids...lol) But on this day he could not leave my side. May 22, 2012 at 11:00AM, after I got out of the shower and felt like I was going to die! Literally... like I was going to die, not from pain alone, but this sensation of pure doom! She looked at me and said "YOU need to go to The Mental Health Center, as in leave my office and drive straight there. You are going crazy and need professional help!! I was completely devastated. I thought as a woman and as a gyno, she would be more sympathetic to what I was going through. It took me about 2 months to find a doctor who would actually listen to me and run a complete hormone panel on me. (My TSH was 1.33 Free T4 1.05 and Free T3 2.6) Was diagnosed Hypo July 2012 and have been on Armour 60 mg 1/daily Along with Magnesium, Vit C, iodine, Selenium and Zinc. I have been eating the Perfect Health Diet for over a year. Walk 15,000 steps or 2 hours morning and late afternoon.. (whichever comes first-sometimes it doesn't take 2 hours) on the treadmill a day. SO.... here is my issues.. I still feel like someone shoved me in a crap shoot and has left me there to mold! I take my Armour Thyroid around 5 am because I am usually up at that time.. I "try" to go to bed at 9-9:30 pm. If I go to sleep I wake up at 1 AM and am awake the rest of the night. If I can't go to sleep I am usually up until 5 or so.. Problem is, my 4 year old gets up between 7:30 and 8! I AM EXHAUSTED! I do not know when to take it, how to take it, what to take in conjunction with (any of the other things I am taking), what to avoid that would interfere?... how much time to wait to take what..when to take what and well, everything!! I think all this figuring out is causing me more anxiety! I have read so many things.. Stop the thyroid madness, living successfully with hypothyroidism, online stuff.. etc. everything is SO CONFUSING! I have gained weight since then. I feel like I am in adrenal failure or something. Is my cortisol too high or too low?.. Do I chew the armour thyroid or not? Do I chop it into and take some in the morning and some in the afternoon? Do I need a higher dose? ARGHHHHH!!! Any and all advice would be much appreciated!

    Thanks so much, Patty

    Welcome Patty, :flowerforyou:
Wow, it sounds like you have adrenal fatigue - big time!
I did too, and going to a naturopath (as well as a Dr), I was able to get help for the adrenal fatigue. She did a saliva test on me, to see which hormone was off, and discovered the cortisol to be low. I'm now on Isocort, and its amazing how great I feel!

If money is an issue, you can order the test online & send it away yourself. I'm not sure if a Dr. would treat you for the results, but there are others that would (naturopath), and those pharmacies that do hormonal work-ups... (sorry can't think of the name).

My naturopath said that the thyroid meds CAN NOT help you until your adrenals are brought back in line. stopthethyroidmadness (the book) has a lot to say about adrenals as well. There is also a "temperature test" that you can take at home, that will establish whether your adrenals are off, and another one (can't remember, sorry). Do a search there, at the site on adrenal temperature test, it will direct you to the tests.

Get help! Wonderful that you're on Armour!

    Thanks Debby!
I sent my doctor a message and asked for her recommendation. She is a Holistic Dr. that tends to use natural approaches. She didn't even mention any synthetic thyroid meds, as I found out about those researching online. Money is not really an issue, so if she doesn't do the test herself and recommends I take it, I will surely look it up!

When she ran my tests she ran a complete blood count on everything I think. The labs bill was close to 1800.00 so I am assuming she ran everything under the sun, but I don't really understand everything. I did notice that the "out of range" results, other than my thyroid hormones, as of 9/27 were for RDW 16.0, Absolute Eosinopohils 585, DHEA Sulfate 238, Testosterone 68 (it was as low as 27), Eastradiol 47, Progesterone 10.4 and FSH 7.6. So maybe I have a big worm in me that is eating me alive...lol

    Thanks so much!

Wow, lots of tests! bioidentical hormones is what I was trying to remember... it seems a lot of women get help with places that do that. I'm not familiar with most of those things you named, but did they test your cortisol? That's what was causing my problem. I'm also a little low in testosterone, but she left it up to me to treat it.
Hope you get your answers & start feeling better soon! :flowerforyou:

    Hi Everyone,

I am 51 and live in Ontario, Canada and joined MFP Jan 2013.
Have lost weight years ago and then slowly added it back on.
In Dec. 2012 my doc sent me for several tests as he thought I might have had a mini stroke. After results came back for carotid doppler he said something showed on my thyroid but not to be concerned.
Recently sent me for another ultrasound on my thyroid and they did a biopsy that same day. Still waiting for results which I won't get until Mar. 13. Although doc doesn't have results yet he called to tell me that doc that did biopsy wants me referred to another specialist.

Have been reading a lot of posts and researching info on thryoid problems and symptoms and have found it quite helpful.
Not sure what my results will bring me but am determined to fight it with all I got.

Thanks everyone for your posts and info.

Hi, I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's at age 17 so that was almost 27 years ago. I've been through about every experience possible I think- from health, medications, to Doctors! I finally found a Dr. about 2yrs. ago that figured out my hormonal mess and works from a natural pathway, rather than with the synthetic thyroid meds that never worked very well for me. I am currently on a completely natural thyroid that is compounded, but is similar to naturethroid. I feel great finally! Only took me 25 years to get here, but I count my blessings everyday! I am more than happy to help others in their thyroid journey as well! Glad to meet you all!

    Hello everyone,

I've had thyroid disease almost my entire life:

    Grave's disease from ages 7-12
    Hashimoto's disease from ages 12-21
    Normal thyroid from 21-28
    Grave's disease from 28-29
Hashimoto's disease at 29 (due to taking Radioactive iodine)

I took Radioactive iodine in December and am currently under supervision with my Endo on my low TSH. I just went in for my second monthly follow-up and had my synthroid dosage increased from 50mcg to 75mcg and will be back for another followup the end of April. I'm currently battling with weight loss (as I'm sure a lot of hypos are).

I'm glad to have joined my fitness pal and to have found this forum. I look forward to speaking with you all and reading your stories/weightloss tips and thyroid struggles and hope to be of support.

    Hi!
I'm Cristina. Hashimoto's diagnosis since 2007. Definitely has been a constant frustration with trying to lose weight, manage low energy, etc. Currently not working so seeing an endo every few months at a clinic who seems to have a pretty good grip on hashi's (compared to others I've been to who wouldn't even consider antibodies as being indicative of a problem until my FOURTH endo finally did a thyroid sonogram.) I will be going to see him this Friday and hopefully discuss alternatives to synthroid since I still feel symptomatic (though not as bad as many others are with hashi).

Anyway- I live in LA with my husband and my dog. Just started Jillian Michaels' 30 day shred. I lost about 45 lbs before my wedding in September and have already gained 10+ back so trying to get and stay on track this time. Looking to lost another 40 or so pounds by August if I can manage it. So we'll see!

Hey guys I'm Nick! I was just diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism back in November 2012. Initially my endo put me on 3pills of methamizole once a day. When i went back in February 2013, he said my levels were still a bit high and increased my dose to 4 pills once a day. Before I was diagnosed with this, i had been working with a personal trainer/bodybuilder to lose weight and get in better shape. I am now up to 160 pounds and really need to work on losing weight and getting in better shape.I was also sidelined late spring through November with an injury from sports. I broke one of my fingers at aussie footy practice, which required surgery and screws to be placed in my finger. I was told to not do any sports or weightlifting until I got the clear from my surgeon.

I also got into the bad habit of still eating badly like I usually would but without doing any physical activity I saw the weight packing on.

Before my flare up of hyperthyroidism in 2011, I was training to be a fitness model. I noticed there was a problem in January 2011 when I lost 10 pounds in one week (yes...one week), and that's when I went to my doctor and blood tests showed I was hyperthyroid. Prior to that, my levels were normal (which was weird because I was told that my thyroid had completely stopped working when I was 12).

After a while, I couldn't work out anymore, my heart rate was 115 bpm, and my palpitations just sidelined me, I was getting too dizzy to do any kind of workout, even walking up stairs. I was on methamizole as well, first starting off with three pills a day, then ended to one pill a day and then back to three pills until it seemed as though the pills were not working. I took the route of RAI on 12/12/12 and am now Hypothyroid. I have to start my fitness journey all over again, and it's going to be extra hard now that I'm Hypothyroid, but I'm going to fight through it.

I wish you luck on your Hyperthyroid journey. Although you are gaining weight you don't want, know that the pills are working and doing its job because you are. Concern should be raised if you're losing a crazy amount of weight with little to no effort.

    Hi All,

    Had my 3rd set of labs done this week. TSH 0.08 - Free T4 0.7 - Free T3 2.6 - Vit D 45.51 - Testosterone .92 - Progesterone .48 - Ferritin (Iron) 53

So- she upped my Armour to 120, changed my progesterone to Prometrium at night before bed to help sleep and (crossing XX fingers) anxiety.. and also gave me DIM to help regulate my estrogen and added some iron supplements. Am going to have cortisol and neurotransmitter testing done too. Ordered a Fitbit because my Omron Pedometer is JUNK!!! I definitely do not need a pedometer that tells me I am doing way more then what I am. I know I do not sleep walk but yet when I keep it on at night it says I have walked 396 steps while sleeping..lol Hopefully I feel like doing more than sitting on the couch soon...lol

    Hope everyone is adjusting well!!

    Hey Patty,
Those numbers look pretty good to me. Can you explain the optimal number beside? I'm kind of surprised she upped your Armour with your TSH so low.
Interesting that you got the testosterone & progesterone tested.

Good for you on the fit bit. Hope it works better for you. I started moving with a MyTrak. It worked wonders to get me going. Now I've given it away, as I know how much I have to move & enjoy it.

After two and one half years on the Hypothyroidism trail I am finally starting to feel hopeful about losing weight (gained 50 pounds over the past three years). It is really hard as you know but I am determined. I can now make it through a day without having to nap! I do take supplements which I have found to be very helpful: Vitamin D3, Magnesium, Selenium and Flax Seed oil. If I had only one piece of advice for those newly diagnosed with hypothyroidism it would be to educate yourself and be your own advocate with your physician; and if your physisician does not work with you or listen to you - fire him or her and find a new physician.
