it's one of those times that something like this will at least get the tension out of the space!! shock value can be very useful ;-)
"wanna make out before the elevator hits the 1st floor?"

The single most important piece of advice I ever read about "conversation" is this: the only goal of crappy chitchat should be to bring the conversation to a more "emotional", more "intimate" stage...
So rather than stating simple facts "Works at ABC, lives in Z", try to know if the person "Works at ABC but doesn't like his job so intends on changing... because actually he'd rather be a guitarist than a lawyer; lives in Z but really would like to go to Europe one day".

Your best bets for this are cues such as:
    - Oh ok... and do you like it?
    - Wow... That sounds great. What do like about it?
    - Really?! I thought it was a great choice of career. what's so bad about it?
    - Ah! I don't know much about that. So how is it?
    - I've been there. I really loved it... Although it was a bit quiet. What do you think of it?

Ask people how they feel about things. They'll love you for that, and they will feel more connected to you.

You could always hit the button for the top floor. Then say, I'm getting off there. How long until you get off?

You know, I saw a thread somewhere (Chit Chat maybe?) about things that you just can't say with a straight face. Mine would most definitely be:

In an elevator - "Going Down?"

Florian, this is the most useful comment you've ever made!! (not that all the others are useless...lol) The art of conversation is a valuable one, in anyone's every day life. And you have articulated it beautifully. Kudos :flowerforyou:

    No one said that.

He did start, she responded so it was his turn to say something.

when u see a good looking guy or girl in the elevator? LOL

Saw this really cute guy in the elevator this morning and he asked if I worked at XYZ firm and I said no, with ABC and I didn't elaborate but now i'm thinking I should have! oh well hopefully I run into him again.
in my defense I did smile so he should have taken that as a hint to keep the conversation going.

what would you have said to keep the conversation going?

    guys , be nice.

I don`t have any better suggestions for what to say but despite the smile, which is of course polite,it sounds like you gave a close ended response.
I would take that from anyone, guy or gal as a conversation ender given the circumstance.

This was going to be my suggestion, reminds me of that Aerosmith video. I'm pretty sure if anyone said that to me I would crack up laughing, but the ice would be broken.

That's why I always think of it......and, it's still hot as hell every time. I do admit that anytime I get in an elevator with a hot guy I'm thinking it. Just a fact of life. Thank you Steven Tyler. \m/

And, Jen....So, do most of mine, that's why I love them. :) And, yeah....it would be very dangerous to have all us peeps in one room.

Hi and a smile usually work.

i usually only see cuties in my bldg around lunch time. there aren't many lunch choices around here so "what did you get?" is also a good conversation starter especially if they're carrying a bag with stuff that smells like food

no need to over think it if you're a woman. guys pretty much respond to anything  i'm sure it's more difficult for guys chatting up ladies since we tend to have our guards up
