Salt cravings

Does anyone else find that by cutting one food group/ taste sensation, they crank up their desire for another!? The lack of sugars I seem, so far, to be okay with (am limiting fruit mostly to berries) but oh my, the salt cravings!! And I was never even a potato chip kinda gal before. I'm giving in to miso cravings, which I know are not acceptable paleo. Anyone have any good paleo-friendly ideas for satisfying a salt craving? Much appreciated.

This probably means that your body is losing more which is why you crave it. I do a nice Broth - really salty... it will cure it =) or salted unroasted nuts.... I do tuna with a little olive oil or coconut oil
  • Thanks! How do you do your broth? And do you add salt to it?

I buy expensive salt and put it on all kinds of stuff.
Separately, I will have the occasional dark chocolate with sea salt in it - that is fing amazing.

I love to salt and pepper my steaks.
For me my cravings were mostly all psychological like, "something crunchy". Most honestly were texture based. odd.

Here is a good recipe for bone broth - you can use marrow bones, chicken, etc.

  • Fab, thank you all. We buy expensive sea salt so I'll wean myself away from the miso and crank up the broth! Thanks

you can also make kale 'chips' in an oven or dehydrator, you tear the kale into chip sized pieces, put them in olive oil (i add a little vinegar too because I always loved salt and vingegar chips), spread them out on either a baking sheet or dehydrator tray. You bake them I think at 250-300 for 10 min or dehydrate until krispy! Some people claim they're like popcorn, I wouldn't go that far but they are good! and lots of vitamins too :) I also salt a lot of my food with high quality sea salt, that was one thing I wasn't willing to give up!

I have had this problem before. When I tried to quit caffeine, I found myself craving more sugar. After I cut back on sugar, my craving for salty foods increased. I never was able to quit caffeine, but I have cut back substantially in both caffeine and sugar intake. Sodium is still a problem area for me.

Olives and pickles are nice salty things that are ok, too.
