  • I did NOT hear Dr Bernstein saying he can reverse diabetes. What I did hear him say was that many diabetics who come to him think they are doing fine with slightly elevated blood sugars - say, in the 100's like you, perhaps - but upon testing, they show signs of complications. After a year or so of the VLC diet, they show signs of reversing the retinopathy, neuropathy, etc., not the diabetes.

I do eat bacon and eggs - not every day, and not pounds at a time. this week, I had 6 eggs and 7 slices of bacon. I don't drink milk. I do eat cheese. I do use cream in sauces. I don't eat commercially prepared deep fried food because they are usually breaded, but I do saute foods in olive oil, butter and/or coconut oil. I eat 6-8 servings of vegetables per day. I do drink alcohol occasionally - 1-2 servings of beer or wine every 1-2 months

My last 42 fasting blood glucose readings have been below 95. The 43rd was a 101 and then I went back on a streak below 97. Now that I have established a repertoire of foods, I rarely test after meals, but I did find 7: 94, 99, 107, 97, 99, 104, 111. My last HbA1c was 5.1. The 3 before that were 5.0, 5.2, 4.9. My cholesterol is 147 with an HDL/LDL ratio of 1.7. My last blood pressure was 107/69

    And I take no medications

Hi Raineylaney, to answer your question specifically. The consensus view amongst diabetics is that we should track net carbs ie total carbs less fibre. While some diabetics do track sugars most do not since sugar is simply glucose and glucose is our enemy. I track Carbs,Protein,Fat, Saturated Fat and Fibre. Dlife .com is a good source of information for people in the US. A number of people have also had success with the Insulin Resistance Diet book. Other diabetics in this group will have their own particular favourites. It's important to realise that the MFP programme is predicated on a change of lifestyle and is not a quick fix diet. The programme has been a great help to many and I hope you find that it helps you to achieve a healthy and active life.
