Net Carbs?

I have been having a really hard time since converting to this new way of eating, getting my carb levels under 100g a day. I am not eating any junk in my diet, so the majority of my carbs are coming from fruits and vegetables. Many years ago I tried the Atkins diet for a while and I remember the book talking about the number of "net carbs" being the one that was important. When I say net carbs, I mean taking the total grams of carbs in a food and subtracting the grams of fiber from it as fiber is counted in the carb count, but is not digested by the body. I have been struggling with my carb numbers cuz I really like fruits and vegetables and though they have a high carb count, they also have a high fiber count as well. What do you guys think about counting net carbs instead? Is it totally cheating? Be honest, you can tell me. I can take it!

I count net personally, but some people might count total. I try to keep my carbs 50 or below, but since up to 100g is still within the weight loss target area per the carb curve map in Primal Blueprint, if I have like 70 total and 53 net for example, it doesn't make much ddifference to me since either way I'm less than 100g.... If that makes sense :)

It does make sense. I don't want to be "cheating", but counting net carbs just makes getting under 100 a lot more attainable. The closest I've come with just straight carbs is 105!

The concept of "net carbs" is kinda silly. To eat fruit while trying to keep your carb intake down is also kind of strange route to go. You don't need fruit.
  • i try to keep mines below 50g but some weeks i just need more so i up it to 70
  • I'm just trying to keep my carbs at 15% of calories or less. I do track fiber, too, and watch the net carbs. My mom did really well on Atkins, and I used it before to drop weight quick, but now I'm back to Paleo and *also* watching the carbs.

I net count too. I don't eat a lot of fruit right now and also haven't started exercising regularly either. I try to keep my carbs under 60g (net). I do try to throw in some high carb days every week or two. It's been working pretty well for me so far. I'm too lazy to do the math, so I found a tool that you can add to MFP that will calculate net carbs for the day as well as give % macros for each meal.

This link shows you what the tool/script looks like and how to configure MFP with it.

Lots of good responses here. Thanks everybody! I think I'm going to try to keep lowering my carbs and tweaking my diet until I find what works for me in the correct carb amount. Most of the fruit is definitely going to have to go :(

I found cutting out fruit made a huge difference, i still eat once in a while but not every day, I read that if you want to lose weight on Paleo, cut out fruit, go for veggies instead.....hard for people who love their fruit, I would rather veggies over fruit, so it was easy for me. Makes a big difference in your carb intake though.
