The more I read on web sites and these forums (not to mention other primal/paleo peoples diaries) the more confused I get as to what we are supposed to not be eating. If I took what I read at face value then pretty much anything goes depending on who you ask.
Can someone please clarify for me what you should NOT be eating while eating primal?
P.S. I have seen the pyrimid on Mark's Daily apple. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/introducing-the-new-primal-blueprint-food-pyramid/#axzz2IkeC60vJ

Thank you :o)

  • It might not be a bad idea to purchase the primal blueprint and see it all there.

    General Paleo no's:
    Grains
    Legumes
    Added refined sugars
    Soy
    Oils like canola, safflower, sunflower
    Dairy

    General Primal no's:
Same as above, but limited dairy is ok. Preference to raw, or fermented dairy.

Everyone basically takes those guidelines and then makes it work for them. Some people are super strict. Some do 90/10. Some 80/20. Some make exceptions as they prefer.

The broad and unspecific rule is: If you can't eat it in it's naturally occurring, unprocessed state (as in it is IMPOSSIBLE for a human to digest), then don't eat it. This means, no grains, rice, corn, or legumes.

Specifically, what you SHOULD be eating is: Meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds.

Do not eat: Bread, pasta, rice, corn, beans, peanuts (not actually a nut), peas, sugar, etc.

If you're strict paleo (as opposed to primal): No white potato or dairy.

This is a hard one. From what I have seen there are very few people who are strict Paleo or primal. Some (including myself) let a few no no's in. I for instance get bored of water so I occasionally drink sugar free squashes watered down so they have a tiny bit of flavour and the naughty milkshake. If I do I always try and go for the brands that have fewer naughty things even if it is expensive. I think the best thing to do is read as much information from Rob Wolff, Mark Sission and other great people and then decide what is best for you.

This, with preference of traditionally raised meat.

Plus, depending on who you ask in the Paleo community, many seem to stay away from saturated fats coming from meat, whereas Primal is more liberal when it comes to saturated fats (though if you're buying conventional meat, it might not be a bad idea to limit the fat a bit).

It Starts With Food is an awesome book! I've heard great things about Primal Blueprint as well.

Within the last month I've really let go of all of the "rules". I'm not obsessing over them anymore. I very rarely ever eat grains. I do allow dairy (maybe more than I should), I try to limit my Starbucks (the syrup is a "no-no") to twice a week. I also occasionally eat protein bars or powders. For some people, maybe I shouldn't classify myself as Primal. But ya know what? This is what works for me right now. I'm still learning and this is a journey!
