signing up for a 5K

So I'm in week 7 and I know I'm going to finish this thing. I am completely enjoying running and it's feeling easier and easier. I really feel like the next step is to sign up for a 5K race. Here's my dilemma -- I'm new to town and don't have any running friends. I actually don't really have any friends -- at least not the kind I would call up to do something like this with. I remember from when I did the Danskin Triathlon a few years ago that it was so great having a big network of supporters at the finish line and I'm wondering if it will bother me to not have that if I sign up for a 5K here. On the other hand, I'm thinking it might be nice to not have the pressure of a big audience.

Thoughts? Experiences?

I can't even get my husband to come out to support me. :)

5Ks are fun anyway. I've met great people after and you're just so exhilarated.

Is there a run shop or runner's club in your area where you can make some runner friends?

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure there are plenty of runner's resources -- shops, clubs, etc -- I just haven't looked into it. I really love my run, but I like it for the solitary experience that it is. Not sure how I'd feel about going out and running with a bunch of other people regularly. Running a race is a little different. I figure I can just do my own thing. Anyway, I'll probably go ahead and sign up. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I feel the same way about the solitary experience. Usually, though, with races, the people who are out for their friends cheer for you as well. It's a lot of fun.

I signed up for my first 5k in October. I was planning to run alone, but last minute, my brother signed up and drove 2 hours (both time either one of us ever ran a 5k "race"). I'd say go for it anyway, even if you are alone. You'll feel accomplished, motivated, and plus, the feeling of doing something you never thought you'd do is liberating.

    Have fun!
