New user, just getting started on a new diet. Going to try to set a calorie goal for myself, then in week to get into ketosis. Any tips for affordable snacking? And as long as any carbs come from fresh vegetables (spinach, tomato, onion, mushroom, broccoli) primarily, should I worry heavily about the numbers?

  • The rule of thumb I use on any food item that contains carbs is that net carbs in a serving should be 5g (net carbs = carbs - fiber). Additionally, it's pretty hard to get in to ketosis if you are consuming more than 30g of net carbs per day. That's even if they are "healthy" carbs as opposed to unhealthy. Once in your digestive system, net carbs are converted to glucose. Glucose is glucose, regardless of the original physical source.

I would view the calorie goal as a rule of thumb to guide you. Also, anticipate cravings for starches, cakes and breads and, potentially, Atkins flu ... headaches, upset tummy, lethargy .... in the first week or two. This is normal as you eliminate carbs and high levels of glucose from your body.

    Welcome!

What's a good no-carb sweetener for coffee? I need my pick-me-up in the morning and don't like it with cream.

Any sugar free sweetner works. But coffee without heavy whipping cream? For me,that would be so sad! :-)
