  • We have a NAGA here in March. However, I plan on attending a clinic with Professer Jucao (5th degree bjj black belt) in stead of that. Good luck!

thanks! i bet that clinic will be awesome. i believe Professor Jucao is Gracie Barra lineage. Jucao is the teacher of Fabio Costa, who in turn, promoted Casey Collias (my professor) to black belt. small world!

lol...it IS a small world! We have an affiliation with his class down in NJ. He's actually our BJJ advisor, and when we compete, we always log the points for Equipe Jucao. The man is AMAZING to watch. Calm...cool...collected...just an unreal person as a whole!

Awesome, i envy the experience it will be!

quick naga update: i got bronze in nogi and gold in gi this weekend! as another testament to the small bjj world, my finals opponent was also gracie barra. when i shook his coach's hand i mentioned MY professor was Barra. it turns out they trained together and knew each other quite well! LOL it explains why my opponent belonged in the finals (great offensive competition-style open guard) but also explains why i knew how to shut it down so instinctively.... i see it everyday at my home gym!

my judo background got all my gi matches off without a hitch! judo throw to knee-on-belly put me up 5-0 every time, so i wasn't fighting under pressure or panic. it was a good feeling.
  • Having a good Judo foundation helps significantly in the initial start of a match. People are very quick to pull guard....why not just take the points? lol

exactly how i see it. you can even score on guard pullers/jumpers. considering they give throw-initiators points even if ends up a guard pull situation, i usually cross-ankle pick (for example: my left hand picks their left ankle) as they sit or before they jump. this puts me into side control with takedown points and position points. even if they dont count it as a takedown, i get guardpass points and position points. at the very least, with no score awarded, we have moved the game to the ground and i am outside the guard.

cross pick is a great quick score...have you tried working in a Tai-otoshi for those wide legged opponents?

i havent attempted it at all since transitioning to bjj. hmm, i used to love that throw. i might knock the dust off of it..
  • Ever since I jacked up my knee...stand up has been next to impossible right now. I always had a GREAT Sasae Tsurikomi Ashi...very quick and with enough torque was always able to land in kuzure-kesa-gatame, however...this was only possible against competitors who wanted to stay on their feet, rather than pull guard immediately

my timing with Sasae used to be bad and i found myself attempting it during times my opponent wasnt off balance enough... they were able to step to regain balance or their foot was still on the ground because i went early. in any case, once i was vulnerable on one leg, they would just direct their weight towards me and we would flop onto the ground usually with me on the bottom in half guard. my timing is infinitely better now but i guess im still gunshy with that tech because of previous fails. (kinda like how you stay away from the booze of your first hangover)

kinda cool talking judo... i usually have to tone my interest down to "i love that hip toss" or "i have an awesome leg trip you should see"
  • lmao @ "I love that hip toss

as much as I love Judo...my knee just can't do it right now. Ive been getting my "fix" with the kickboxing, but it's not the same. I've just been immersing myself in the ground game. As "white belt" as this may sound...I REALLY need to work on my guard passing
