Water Retention

I have been trying to little by little increase the amount that I lift in the gym. The progress is slow but steady. I am lifting in splits 3 times per week (back/bis, chest/tris and legs/shoulders). 2 other days I do HIIT on the treadmill. 1 day I do a long run to train for a half marathon in April. The final day I rest or do something very light.

I am really frustrated because I am constantly retaining water. I know that it is water weight because my ring is tight when I wake up in the morning and loosens during the day. This morning I could barely get it off to shower. It normally spins around because it is so big.

I know that it is normal to retain water when lifting weights because your muscles hold water to repair themselves, but does it ever go away? I drink about 80 oz of water per day.

Any suggestions?

If you continue to lift it will not - however, the water retention is in the muscles, not in general like 'normal' water retention is, so the fact that your ring is tight suggests to me that it is not lifting related, especially as there are no actual muscles in your fingers.

How much sodium do you get on average a day?

Wow...okay. I think I have my answer. Thanks for the tip about the finger swelling versus water retention from lifting.

I doubt you are the only one who has tight rings or clothes after last weekend! One way to help counteract water retention is to try to eat potassium rich foods.
