Supplements

Hello everyone :flowerforyou:

I noticed a running trend in my diet, despite my efforts, is that I rarely meet iron, calcium, or vitamin D daily recommended intake. As for vitamin D, it's difficult to get this year round where I live and I am indoors a lot. Would anyone recommend taking supplements to fill this void? Are there are simple additions to a diet that could remedy this? Any advice would be appreciated.

Edit: I guess I missed potassium in that list!

  • Hello. I am new to Paleo (about 5 weeks), and obese with a significant amount of fat to shed, so I do take supplements. After I lose some fat, and really settle into a groove, I will probably discontinue some of these. I am *not* an expert on supplementation, so please don't take this as literal advice; it's just what I am doing at the moment. Robb Wolf's "The Paleo Solution" has a nice section on supplementation.

    Multi-vitamin/mineral: 1 x daily
    Calcium/magnesium: 3 x daily
Fish oils: about 720mg (EFA content) 3 x daily
    Vitamin D3: 5000 IU daily
Acetyl-L-carnitine: 1000 mg in early AM, 500 mg late morning
Alfalfa: 1 g 3 x daily (specifically for my skin)
Himalaya liver care (herbal liver support): 2 x daily

    That's about it.

For what its worth, I drink Almond Milk for Calcium and Coconut Water for Potassium. I try to eat smoked salmon or salmon sashimi when I can to get some Vitamin D during the winter.

I noticed that my iron comes in lower than suggested, but if I were eating a full 2,200 calories of the foods I am eating now, it would hit the mark. Maybe try that math with a few and see if it works.
