Hey there,

This post, although initially intended for me to post today's morning test result for the "What's my FBG today" thread
quickly turned direction and into a new topic.

So, I tested before going to bed last night after coming home from a meeting I had around 10pm. 144.(ouch),

The above number showed me, not all carbs are alike, when determining my mealtime insulin to carb ratios.
One size, does NOT fit all. To be sure, testing one and two hours after this meal would have told me what to expect.

Before going to bed I treated the 144 w/ a (bolus) correction, making certain it had been a full 4hrs after bolusing
for my dinner carbs, before I gave myself any correction at all, safely.

I thought, the correction ratio i used, was sound before going to bed, bringing that 144 down for my next mornings' FBG test.
It's very important for me to know, my fast acting insulin correction ratios, when determining how many units I should be giving myself, to prevent dangerous hypos from occuring.

Hence, my FBG this morning was 64 @ 5:30 and learned, I can back off a unit or two when making corrections. Again, one size
doesn't fit all when making fast acting insulin corrections either.

After my test reading, and doddling about, savoring cups of my delicious coffee :drinker:, before I new it, It was 7:15am. Breakfast time. Thought to myself, "better test again Bob, before you eat", and glad I did. Only 45 mins later, my blood sugars had risen to 83, with nothing to eat yet. Is there a correlation with my coffee?, don't know yet?...Possibly, the dreaded morning (DP) dawn phenomenon still working its effects on some of us.

So with that said, had I not tested again before eating my breakfast, my meatime insulin to carb (ratio) calculation would have been skewed and incorrect. Bob, If you don't eat within 30 mins. after your morning fasting test, test again.

"Think like a Pancreas" By Gary Scheiner, MS. CDE, is an awesome book and, one I've had since starting insulin therapy to treat my blood glucose levels to prevent suffering from diabetic complications related to poor blood glucose contol.
A very detailed book and a must have for me, as an insulin dependant type 2 diabetic.

In closing My little story, MFP is a life saver for me. Literally. It's having a profound effect on my life and, the new lifestyle journey I've begun for myself as a person living with type 2 diabetes.

By honestly working this program, by logging in each day, logging my food, incorporating consistent excersize strategies, this program and more specifically for me, interacting with this group, has enabled me to not only gain a better understanding of myself, but ultimately it's afforded me with new career opportunites and personal growth knowledge.

To the T2 group, please know, In the short time I've been here, I've gained an enormous amount, notwithstanding, the new friendships I've made. Your cherished, and I thank you!

Why am I so typey today? Idk, could be the coffee:drinker: :noway: I'm sincerely confident, it's the need within me, to give back to a community that's given me so much.

Have a great day EVERYONE:smile:

Bob

Thanks for the post Bob, it's good to hear that you have gained so much from being part of this group. Your experience is one that so many of us share. Positive feedback is always helpful in encouraging group members to contribute because it's only as we share our experiences and frustrations that we realise that we are not alone and that there are lots of genuine people here willing to help and encourage. Thanks for the book reference. It's not one that I've come across before but it does sound interesting. Again it's only through knowledge that we are empowered to take ownership of our condition and begin the journey to a healthy and active lifestyle. Thanks again for sharing your story.

Thanks Bob... I am with you on the toughts of coffee effecting my sugar... I would think it isn't (drink black), but I noticed since I have been drinking my coffee, my BS seems to be a bit higher. I chose not to have coffee yesterday or today to see what my numbers do. I am sure it is just our mind playing tricks on us and it is just the normal ups and downs of type 2 diabetes.

I too have learned so much since I joined MFP 1/16/13 and am so glad I found this group. So many have been so helpful here and I have to say for the ones with open food diaries, it has helped me too. Too see their ratio of carbs (and what kind) to their protien's etc.

So I agree with Bob 120%... Thank you all for being such good friends and supportive of the trials, errors and success's of having this rotten curse known as Type 2 diabetes.

Just an added thank you to all you have all been so much help to me. I don't think in a lifetime I will learn all there is to know about this diabetise. But I'm willing to learn all I can. Been keeping my readings in the 6's not all good but certainly better. I started in the 8's and seldom seen 7 now seeing a lot of 6 so I'm improving. Diabetic since Nov. 24 of 2012.

And again a great big thank you.
