I've been on it for years, and it's never made losing weight any easier. I think I'm currently at 1000 mg in the evening. I also have hypothyroidism and am on .136? mg a day. That hasn't helped either. Now that I'm serious about losing weight, I'm going to ask my endo for her input on why I'm not losing that much.
Maybe I'm just impatient. I've been losing at a slow and steady pace, but I expected to drop lots quickly at the beginning with this 180 turn in lifestyle.

In late March 2012, at 247 pounds, I already had hypertension and elevated cholesterol. I was just diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The doctor wanted to prescribe Metformin but I skipped the Metformin option, and chose to supplement my new and very restricted diet with Solgar brand Alpha Lipoic Acid, 600 mg twice a day. I also took Cinnamon 500 mg and Chromax Plus 500 mg both twice a day. By mid-September, I had dropped 46 pounds (since April 2012) while on my restricted diet. I had also reversed the Type 2 Diabetes to a pre-diabetes A1c level and discontinued blood pressure medication. The doctor was surprised and informed me that he didn't need to see me again until the end of March 2013. Since November, I began exercising a bit and I've lost another 8 pounds even after increasing my daily calorie intake from 1200 calories to 1880 calories. At about 23 pounds away from my goal weight of 170, I'm completely medication-free and feeling pretty good!0

By the way, if you want to drop several pounds quickly, eat fresh Parsley with every meal and add fresh Dandelion to your salads. Both are very effective diuretics that will control water retention and reduce your blood pressure. Parsley, in particular, does a great job of optimizing your sodium balance and improves liver and kidney function. Once you get your sodium level optimized, and you burn the fat that surrounds your cells by taking the Alpha Lipoic Acid, Cinnamon, and Chromax Plus, your insulin resistance will begin to subside and everything begins to work much better. It takes a few months but once the process reversal begins, it accelerates very quickly until your body finds its systemic equilibrium. Your ticker shows you lost 12 lbs so far. How long did it take you to lose that? The recommend not losing more than 1 to 2 lbs a week. Anything faster than that, you probably will gain it back along with the bad eating habbits0 -
Metformin is a recommended treatment for metabolic syndrome/PCOS. I am a type 2 diabetic. I also have metabolic syndrome/PCOS. I have been successfully controlling the diabetes just with diet. Yesterday at the doctor's office my A1c was 5.1. That is a non-diabetic range. However, my doctor prescribed Metformin specifically to treat the metabolic syndrome/PCOS. Ignoring metabolic syndrome/PCOS will lead to type 2 diabetes. Eating right and controlling blood sugar will help prevent or mitigate diabetes. But, there are a lot of other issues created by metabolic syndrome/PCOS that diet alone will not address: infertility, thinning hair, hair in the wrong places, hypothyroid, ovarian cysts, irregular periods to name a few.
Metformin will NOT make you lose weight. It will help your body process insulin better so that you can lose weight with the right diet. Your thyroid medication will also NOT make you lose weight but it will make it possible to lose weight, again, with the right diet.
Hands down, the best diet for a woman with metabolic syndrome/PCOS is a lower/low carb diet. And, VERY IMPORTANT, anyone on thyroid medication and battling metabolic syndrome/PCOS must eliminate all soy from their diet. Read labels. It's in a lot of food. Soy interferes with thyroid medication. Soy will further suppress thyroid function. It is also a plant estrogen and will negatively affect your hormones which are already unbalanced due to the metabolic syndrome/PCOS.0 -

It's taken since the first of the year to lose that. So it's within the right range of weight loss per week. I'm just impatient.0
