Safe Starting Weight for C25K

I was just wondering what is a safe weight to start C25K. I started it when I was around 270 and it gave me shin splints within a week. I was able to keep up with the program but my shins didn't like it. I was friends with another guy(can't find him on my friends list now) who was bigger at one point and he said he had to start I think around 220 but I cannot be sure. I'm 5ft7 and am currently 260, one of my goals is to get running again. I ran a 13:10 2 mile in the Army when I was around 18, now 29. I feel just as energetic as I was then but the weight is really holding me back. I do not want to have to take off 3 weeks from working out because I get shin splints again. So I want to make sure I'm at a safe weight to start up again, because I don't want to hinder my weight loss any further.
Thanks for your time,

I started at 304 pounds and didn't modify the program at all. Follow the program exactly and don't do more than it says to even if you feel like you can so you don't hurt yourself. Ask your doctor's advice before getting started.0

Officer Dan - My guess that it wasn't your weight. It was your shoes or your stride. I just got new shoes. I think they're a touch small so my toes bump up against the inside and I'm getting shin and knee pain for the first time even though I'm lighter than when I started. I also got fierce shin splints when I was race walking, which emphasizes a heel strike when training.0

I just finished week one. I have to do the program using the elliptical machine for a couple reasons. I live in MN & in the winter when I run I get a really bad sore throat & have a hard time breathing. The treadmill is too hard impact & by the 2nd round of jogging, my shins hurt so bad I wanted to cry. Also, I have an elliptical machine in my home. I know I will have to adjust when I can start running outside or hopefully as I lose weight on the treadmill. But for now it is still a great workout. Btw I weigh 216.0
