Shoulderstand Issues

Okay I'm semi-new to Yoga and only started practicing regulary about 6 weeks ago. I know I have a long way to go but my first goal of achieving an unassisted headstand was mastered this past week!
On a more confusing note, I'm really struggling with shoulderstands. My main issue is that I'm rather large busted and when I go into shoulderstand I seriously feel like my chest is going to suffocate me! It's tough enough to find balance, ect, but I don't know how to get around the whole feeling of suffocation!
Any other ladies out there with the same problem? Any ideas of how to get around it? I know I'm chunky but I'm getting there..just not sure how to fix this one.

I have a similar issue - my chest is pretty large and makes some poses (like shoulderstand) uncomfortable. I'm in a teacher training and they told us: for large busted women who are uncomfortable in shoulderstand - don't do it. They gave me the alternative of viparita karani - which is legs up the wall pose - or half shoulder stand.
You should ask your teacher for suggestions and modifications, though.0 -
I have the same issue and I have asked my instructor how to handle it.
Minimizer bra does wonders. Also practice.
I struggled with the suffocating feeling for so long but about a year into steady practice, I seem to have found a spot that is less difficult for me. Maybe I've just come to terms with the feeling and knowing it's not going to suffocate me. Maybe I've worked into a better position. Either way, it's work itself out but until then, get a really excellent bra that holds them puppies down!0 -
If you are at home, you can take your bra off. It's more complicated in a class though. You can take a strap around the top part of the breast line and strap them in. You can also adjust your set up: if you use blankets, try adding more. If you do not use blankets (be careful of your neck, most necks do not go into 90 degrees of flexion), move your weight away from you head and put more weight on your hands.
Hope that helps.0
