Wondering if I'm doing this opposite- I'm targeting 40 protein, 30 carb, 30 fat. I'm reading people are using 40 carb and 30 protein- am I backwards on these numbers?

Replies

  • I do the 40 carb 30 fat 30 protein, but not sure you could say you are doing it backwards. 40% is a LOT of protein. I could never reach that macro myself. Matter of fact when I begin my cycling season I will bump my carbs up to 50%.

Yeah, I'm having a hard time reaching that level of protein, especially eating regular food. Higher protein usually comes with higher fat. Right now my macros are pretty much an even split between all 3.

I think it all depends on how much we can eat of something or how your body reacts to things.. I know some do low carb or higher fat etc.. I currently do 40/40/20, but I have done 50(p)/30(c)/20(f) as well.

Traditional one is 40% carbs, based on Zone diet and previous Maffetone advice, and some other diet types out there.

With a smallish TDEE, it is a quick and dirty method of confirming you hit the recommended protein intake which is really better based on grams, not %. But if you don't know LBM, good enough.

But when larger TDEE, like Gap and I will have this summer, we'll need more carbs for more cardio, and recommended protein will stay exactly the same, perhaps tad higher.

My LBM (per my spreadsheet) is 170lbs. 40% protein is 270g/day. I flipped protein and carbs around. I think that'll be easier to manage @ a little over 200g of protein.

    I agree.

Wow, ya. Could get by with 170 g then, but at least you know a range now, 170-200 is just fine.
