HELP!! eating the right things re carbs

I need some help I really am not sure what are good carbs and what are bad I have an idea e.g. brown rice etc good white bad but I am really struggling to lose my last 14lbs.

I am upping my protien as I think this iwll help me but could do with ideas for meals. I'm in the uk by the way for any overseas people.

Currently on 5 metformin a day 2 am 1 lunch 2 pm and Byetta (excenatide) 10 mg injection twice a day. I know bread is my worst choice but I try not to eat it if I can, I cut it put completely at one piont but it is sneaking back in.

I workout on a reguklar basis and have just started lifting all be it small weights doing body pump class.

Any advice would be great, my diary is open to friends only but I may make it public if it wll help.

Good carbs are ones with a low glycemic load/level. Bad carbs have a high glycemic load/level. There are websites that will tell you what the glycemic load/level is for any food.

High glycemic foods include sugar, potatoes, flour, bread (even the whole grain ones), rice (both brown and white), oats, pasta, fruit, peas, corn, starches, and low fat dairy.

I can't see your diary so I don't know how many grams of carbs, protein and fat you are consuming. But, based on what I usually find, I would recommend keeping your protein where it is. Lower your carb intake by half and increase your fat intake.

A great resource for learning about controlling your blood sugar and reducing medication is bloodsugar101.com.

Another good site, especially since you are in the UK is www.diabetes.co.uk. Active forum and really good advice. Lots of advice on diet - especially low carb. Lots of recipes.
    Good luck with your journey.

Hi Emma, previous posts offer good advice ref good carbs equating to foods with a low GI. You're on the ball re brown rice etc. Like yourself I'm in the UK and I can endorse the recommendation for Diabetes.co.uk. They have a good weekly newsheet which you can sign up for and there is a good forum. The only previous point I would take some issue with is the recommendation to drastically lower your carbs. While a number of people have had some success with this approach, it does not work for everyone. Diabetes is a very individual condition and each of us has to go through a process of trial and error to find out what works best for us as individuals. I hope this helps.

Emma, I'm with Robert on this one. Lowering carbs works for some, a number of my MFP friends do this and have been very successful at reducing their BG levels and therefor HbA1c. T2 is an unusual disease, what works for me may not work for you. My concern with this low carbing approach is that is the negative side of eating more fat going to raise cholesterol levels, this view may be unfounded but it's a risk I'm not prepared to take.

If you have a meter, my advice, eat to it. Expensive at first but see which carbs spike your BG levels.

Laura also offers excellent advice on eating a carbs with a low GI loading. Personally I found this too complicated, but I have read that a number have been successful
