What do I wear?!

Hi All

So, I have an interview for a spot in a PhD program coming up, and I am stumped as to what to wear!

Now, I've been on interviews before, and I had the normal skirt suit with a little something extra deal. Easy peasy.

This is different. It's not, from what I can tell, a formal interview. The invitation was posed as 'hey, come hang out in the lab all day, and then we'll all go out to grab some dinner.' Maybe it's just me, but wearing something with nylons and heels doesn't seem to fit the bill. Neither do dress pants. On the same token, though, jeans are a no go either.

Oh, and did I mention, I will be the only one interviewing.

I am sure this is something easy, but I have spent the past few weeks agonising over this! I have bought countless pairs of black pants and a shirt that I can find no pants to wear with.

I'm about to just go in a wetsuit.

What do y'all think? Have you had a situation like this?

When I went to interview for my PhD, the invitation was almost exactly the same. I wore clean, unripped jeans and a clean but not dressy shirt and a hooded sweatshirt. Good thing I didn't dress up, or I would have been wildly out of place. Maybe it depends on the school/field? I find some departments are a bit dressier. I'm in ecology/wildlife biology, and most of the professors and all of the students just wear jeans and t-shirts/fleece stuff.
