Alternatives to Almonds?

I just started Paleo on Sunday and so far I've been keeping with it, which is difficult because I love cheese, but many of the recipes I've read include almond flour or almond crusted things. Do yall have any suggestions on what a good alternative for almonds would be?

Also, please add me because I am new to this and I need all the help I can get!

Coconut flour can be used instead of almond flour, though I'm not certain if it would be a 1:1 replacement, volume wise. I don't bake enough to know. Instead of Almonds for "almond crusted things", I suppose other nuts would work but I'm not actually sure what you mean by "almond crusted things".

Out of curiosity, why do you want an alternative to almonds? Allergies?

    Pecan flour is also good.

For the most part, I eat really simple food that doesn't require a recipe. Meat, salad or veggies on the side. I prefer to just eat the nuts instead of making stuff with them.
  • Oh, yeah I am allergic to nuts. I've seen recipes for almond encrusted salmon or chicken, but I can't eat nuts in general.

I was wondering that too. Nuts, soy, and seeds are high in oxalate, which is a chemical that can help cause kidney stones. Even though I drink 12 cups of water a day.

I love coconut flour. I could eat it straight out of the bag! You normally use a lot less coconut flour than you would almond meal.
As for "crusted things", have you tried desiccated coconut/coconut chips?

Ugh. Almond flour. Words can't really describe how much I hate that stuff, but I'll try: GRRAHARGHHAGHAGHAHFHFHAGHRWBYILBIH - nope, didn't work.

Coconut flour is great for baking, as for crusting things, quinoa works surprisingly well - assuming you're at all interested in eating a little bit of quinoa. Egg whites also give things a great bit of extra crisp - save the yolks for smoothies or ice cream - and coat your salmon or chicken in an egg white and sprinkle some kind of grated thing on top; like, say, shredded coconut.

Unless of course, your nut allergy extends to coconut. In which case... disregard this entire post.
