I'm just looking for a little help... I am new to the "Eat more to weight less" philosophy but it totally makes sense and I am sticking with it. I have put on a few lbs (about 3 lbs in about 3 weeks) since I have upped my calories but I am sticking to it. I am already at a "healthy" weight and I am looking to reach my optimum fitness level! I want to get stronger and run faster/longer, etc...and I know this is the lifelong philosophy that supports that goal.

That being said.. I have plugged my numbers into SO MANY different calculators and they are all different. I just don't know what to do or how many calories I should be taking in.

I have been doing the P90x workouts (not following the program perfectly) or going to the gym. I usually do the full body "Core Synergistics" workout once a week and the legs workout for strength. I mix it up with the cardio workouts. I also run outside when possible, and do intervals on the treadmill. I usually go to the gym for my upper body workouts and do circuit type training. My workouts last anywhere from 30-45 minutes on average. I am a school teacher so I am on my feet most of the day. I am 24 years old, 5'9" and about 150-155 lbs (depending on the time/day  ).

Again.. sorry that this is SO LONG but I just want to make sure that I am on the right path here. Some calculators tell me to eat 1500 cals and some are telling me to eat 1900 cals... MFP had me at 1400.. Confused confused.

THANK YOU if you are able to help!!!

  • When I plug your #'s into Scooby's calculator your #'s would be:
    BMR 1534
    TDEE 2378
    TDEE-15% 2021

That is with you set to your highest weight (155) and your activity level set to moderate.

YOu should never eat below your BMR. TDEE is what your body will need to maintain your weight. Tdee-15% is to lose body fat. If you could answer a few questions it might get some more responses for you. I am also new to this but have been doing pretty well.

What do you have your calories on MFP set to? Do you lift weights?

Okay, wonderful! Thank you so much for taking the time to do that. WOW 2021 seems like a lot of calories! I might have to work up to that number!

As of right now I just have my MFP set to lose a 1/2 lb per week and moderately active. It has me at about 1700 calories for the day. I wasn't sure if I should enter in my workouts with that too...? Should I eat back my exercise calories or change my calorie intake on workout days? This is where I start to get confused.

As for weight lifting, yes. I do lift weights. I have an upper body day (arms, shoulders, back and chest). I do 2 different exercises per body part. 3 sets of 12-15 reps. I also have a lower body day. I usually do the P90x legs workout for this. I also do a full body day which consists of lighter weights and circuit training.

I am glad you are doing well. Have you seen results?

If you use the calculator in MFP it does not include exercise. You would need to eat back your exercise. Follow the numbers from the Scooby calculator that Curlygirly80 pulled for you. These numbers include exercise. However, since you are a teacher and on your feet all day, you will need to determine if moderate is the correct setting for you.

Hi from one teacher to another. When I got my fitbit, I was surprised at how "active" I am during my regular work day!

If your going to use MFP you need to estimate your calories burned from your workout and eat them.. so 1700 calories plus 45 minutes of working out is probably 300 calories.. there ya go 2000.. maybe more.. And don't even go off what MFP estimates you lose per week.

I would eat one calorie number everyday (in this case the TDEE - cut %) and do your exercise and not eat back those calories.. so roughly 2000 or 2021.. Get about 1g protein per lb of weight and try to eat smarter and healthier...

Nice pic from the Dells too.
