Cheap protein

Ok, so money is tight for us... I have no objection to eating lots of meat (my hubby certainly doesn't!), and I prefer it to other forms of protein, as other forms (beans, nuts, etc) tend to have a higher carb count. But meat, especially unprocessed, filler-free, antibiotic/hormone-free meat--is expensive!!!
What are some other sources of protein that are cheaper than meat, but are lower in carbs??

I grind my own beef for ground beef. I stock up when sirloin roasts come on sale for under $3 lb. Sirloin ground beef is like $5-6 lb around here and is way better than the regular ground beef found at grocery stores. I also like adding a cup of reconstituted TVP per a lb of ground beef, especially when I make tacos. Can't tell the difference when adding 2 packets of taco seasoning to the mix. TVP is a healthy filler to add.
Chicken is expensive here, about $6-7 lb reg. Turkey and Ham are much cheaper when you roast your own whole turkey or ham.
If you and your hubby are outdoors people, then hunting for your own venison and fish is cheap. We use venison like beef. The deer here don't have a game taste to them as they feed mostly on soybeans. My dad shoots 7-10 deer a year for the family to eat throughout the year. Deer are abundant here and each doe tag is only $20. You get about 100 lbs of venison per a deer. We butcher and process the deer ourselves and make a party out of it. Good times.
I also have about 20lbs of fish (sunnies, crappies, walleye and northern pike) in the freezer right now from two fishing trips from nearby lakes. It only cost us about $40 in gas for the two trips and we didn't need to buy bait. Earthworms and night-crawlers are free if you pick them yourself.0
