Hey everyone, I've just moved to Sydney (from Boston) for uni, and I'm totally lost on ideas for CHEAP, easy, healthy meal ideas in Australia...help?! haha it's hard enough navigating moving to a new city alone age 18, without trying to figure out what to eat too...so far I've been bad - cereal most meals. I feel like this should change!

Concerning meals, if you have the time, go get yourself some fresh ingredients, and google cheap and quick recipes. The key is fresh. Always. :)

One cheap and healthy meal idea is to go get a roast chicken from a supermarket and some green salad ingredients (Iceberg, cucumber, tomato, onion etc) and throw together a shreded chicken salad (lose the skin ofcourse) ... For under $15 you can have upto 4 meals that are pretty satisfying. You can definitely alternate this with your current cereal meal plan (lol, I simply couldn't do that ... I'd miss the veggies sorely) as that way you are kinda balancing the carbs, protein and fat ..
    Good luck! :)

Welcome to the 3rd most expensive city in the world....

Fresh is best. Eating out can add up to lots of $$$$ if you do it too regularly. Plus you don't know what's going into your body.

I guess the cooking part depends on your living situation. Do you have a full kitchen? If yes, then cook from scratch. If no, then you may want to look into recipes that don't require stoves or ovens... microwaves can do amazing things as well... apparently, though I'm scared to try...

Good luck though. I moved to Sydney 2 years ago from Brisbane and love it here... It really is an awesome place :)

Hi there and welcome to Sydney - I'm at UNSW.

My biggest hint is sushi: sushi bars, particularly in food courts, will sell stuff stupidly cheap towards the end of the day. Two rolls for $3 is not uncommon, hunt around for the best deals.

Also go shopping in supermarkets in the last hour or two before they close - same thing happens, particularly with bread, also check out the dairy case, deli and fresh produce sections - the premade salad tubs like coleslaw for half price, marked down hot chickens are always possibilities. Different supermarkets have different processes, but just go for a wander through late at night and you'll soon figure out which days of the week are best etc.

There's usually free food on campus (regardless of what uni you're at) at least once a week, but it's generally not healthy: sausage sizzles or pizzas. Still, free food is free food.

The other suggestion is get away from campus. Convenient food, even the healthier stuff, I find tends to have a bit of a premium if it is in a short distance from large numbers of students and not a student union outlet.

    Good luck
