The Key to Successful Training

According to the book "Lore of Running," "...the key to successful training, at least for the first 12 months or so, is the amount of time you spend running each week, rather than the distance you cover or the speed at which you run. Therefore, you should initially aim to run for a certain time each session. You will run father when you are fresh and rested than when you are tired. In this way, the effort will be controlled. Remember that the initial goal in distance training is to increase gradually the speed or effort that can be maintained for prolonged distances."
Sad, isn't it?
Another quote, from Arthur Newton:
"Nearly all of us dash into it hoping for and expecting results which are quite unwarranted. Nature is unable to make a really first-class job of anything if she is hustled. To enhance our best, we need only, and should only, enhance our average. That is the basis we ought to work on, for it succeeds every time when the other fails. So, in running, it is essential to take to it kindly."
Man. I'd just like to be able to crank out a 9 minute mile....
