Has anyone here ever tried the Medifast diet. My endo is recommending it (not pushing).

I have never heard of it. What is the Dr telling you. I will see what I can find online.

I just checked it out on-line. I have heard of Medifast but didn't know too much about it...so I was curious, too. The calories range from 800-1000 per day and they advise being under a doctor's care. Most of the food is "Medifast" except for one meal which they give you guidelines for...lean meat, poultry or fish with veggies/salads, etc. It is low in carbs and one of the "cautions" is when you go off the diet you need to be ready to fix your own meals, still trying to follow their guidelines.

The calories are below the 1200 suggested by many doctors and nutritionists. You have a quick weight loss at first, then it slows down. The plan also includes an emphasis on exercise...and one quote was that it helps you learn to handle "hunger".

Of course you have to make the decision but I'm thinking you could apply the principals by making healthy food choices (using MFP information) and try that first. This site is helpful when figuring carbs, etc., and planning out your meals. I don't know how expensive Medifast is but since you pretty much buy all your food from them it is probably up there in price. You could buy fresh fruit, veggies, etc., rather than rely on pre-packaged meals, supplements, and shakes. Do some more research on-line and maybe ask the doctor for more information and why he suggested it to you.

Thanks for the comments. I know why he wants me to do it. My A!C is ridiculous. He wants me to get my BS down NOW. My problem is mainly because I am having a very hard time with meal planning. It is just SO much easier to grab something at the local fast food place for lunch than trying to figure out what to take and packing a lunch and all of that stuff. It just takes way too much time and effort so this would be planned for me. Once I can get my BS under control and lost about 50 pounds, I can gradually move to a more normal diet. He did not say I HAVE to use this, he said I HAVE to do something. This being one of the options.

As for cost, I was VERY surprised that the price of the meals averages $12.50 per day which for the whole day is less than I spend now.

Considering the circumstances, it might be a good idea to at least try. Maybe you can add some extra veggies, protein or lower carb fruits to bring the calories up a bit and keep from getting too hungry. I didn't know what the price was so that seems ok...although not sure how many meals are shakes, etc. And it will give you time to look into making your own healthy meals since you felt that was a problem right now. Good luck with whatever you decide.
