Hitting Practice?

I've been doing derby for about 8 months now. I'm struggling with "committing to the hit" or even landing a strong hit while scrimmaging. When we do drills I don't have much of an issue, but it's so different in game play. Are there any specific drills or cross training that will assist with this outside of practice time? Things I can focus on at home?

  • How long have you been scrimmaging for?
Are the drills that you do close to scrimmage conditions?

I find when we are practicing in drills I'm quite good at them but when things start getting to a point where it's random and I have to rely on timing it gets a bit messy.

We do some drills where everyone is on the track together and our coach will blow a whistle and you have to hit someone in whatever way we've been practicing. Because we get 2-3 seconds everyone ends up packed up so we can get a good chance to hit each other.

The more you scrimmage the better you'll be.

It's definitely one of those "the more you do it, the better" things. If you're trying for shoulder hits, make sure you're trying to use your hips. That is where the power is. Between that and stepping into hits (a lot of people have a bad habit of dragging their toe), that can help a lot.
