so i have a few serious questions about curls.

where do they fit in in a traditional strength trainin program? what kind of benefits do you get from them?

what are the differences between doing a barbell curl, a seated preacher curl, a seated dumb bell curl? the ez curl bar, or the one that has the two handles that keep your palms facing inward (don't know the name... hammer curl bar?) what are the differences/benefits of hammer curls and 'regular' curls??

"Big arms are fun, and if their training doesn't interfere with the rest of the program, wait till everybody's gone, like I do." - Mark Rippetoe

-Fitting them in a traditional strength training program: do them along with the rest of your upper body work. You reach the point of diminishing returns quickly with direct work of small muscles, 3 sets 1-2x per week is plenty for most people.

    -benefits: bigger/better looking biceps

-The point of the ez curl bar is to reduce the stress on the wrists.

-Different types of curls target different parts of the biceps. Find the exercise you're curious about on exrx.net, and it will tell you exactly what you're targeting.

The bicep is involved in supinating the wrist. Hold your arm at a 90 degree and then watch your bicep as you turn your palm to face up and down. You will see the bicep contract. This is why people train curls while turning the weight or holding at different angles like hammer or reverse.

There is a technique called the Helm's curl which I really like.

damnnit..forgot the scientific reason why, but reverse curls is a good assist move for pulls.

Also Ahnold liked them as he felt it helped push up the peak of his biceps.

Pfffftt. I like my forearms. And they're not "big"- but they sure have some nice definition.

Some people get their panties in a bunch over people doing direct arm/ab/calf work. It's not considered hardcorz

Yep. Just do your curls at the end of your workout along with any other isolation moves.

^ I have nothing to add to that.

Regarding people who diss arm training, my personal belief is that it's fine to add in as long as it's not at the expense of developing other areas that may benefit more given the individual goals/etc.

i did a few sets of standing EZ bar curls today. probably too much weight on it though, i was definetly bending my knees and arching my back as i was bringing the weight up.

also, i felt my grip was too wide.

you know how it is recommended to do a pulling motion for each pushing motion (at least) for upper body shoulder balance, well when one is doing a lot of bench pressing which involves a lot of tricep activation it is a good idea to do some sort of antagonistic movement which could be a bicep curl.

Me personally, in my beginner stages I could already do chinups so I did them as I much prefer compound exercises but recently have also included neutral grip curls (on tricep bar) for direct arm work when I'm just too stuffed to get any decent chinup reps in after other compound exercises.
