Metabolic Damage.....at what point?

Hi all!
I've been seeing quite a bit about metabolic damage floating around recently and I have read the threads and watched the Layne Norton youtube video on the topic.
I'm wondering how common this is in non-competitors and if anyone has any information about how one would know if they suffer from it. Is it purely based on plateaus or are there other "symptoms" (for lack of better term)?
Does this apply to individuals who have only eaten VLCD for long periods of time or at what level is a VLCD? How much of a role does exercise play in this?
A lot of questions, I know, but I'm really trying to get a handle on what has been happening with me personally and although I do think it's a stretch, it's something I would like to educate myself more about anyway
Thank you in advance!

I think the technical definition is <800 cals a day.
Exercise plays a role because it increases the size of the caloric deficit (A VLCD done properly doesn't include a lot of exercise activity).
I think the primary symptom would be an inability to lose weight despite a low energy intake.
One day I'll get tired of citing Lyle McDonald, but here ya go: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/fat-loss/why-big-caloric-deficits-and-lots-of-activity-can-hurt-fat-loss.html0 -
