Expanded workout opportunity

Let's say your normal lifting/running routine is about 50-90 minutes...but then you have a weekend when, for various reasons, your workout time could easily be several hours each day. You also have more rest time available too.

How would you adjust your workouts for this opportunity?

If I were completely satisfied with my current programming I wouldn't do anything different and I'd spend that time on video games or posting on MFP.

But if you really felt like utilizing that I'd probably increase accessory volume after all my main work was done and/or I'd consider adding in some technique work (for example, working on squat/deadlift form) or some other functionally valuable training.

I don't like lifting over about 75 mins even if I could. And even that's just if I'm doing a low volume strength routine where I'm taking 2-4 mins rest between sets.

    SS, thanks. That makes sense.

And noob, I can see that...but don't think of it as a longer workout then, but as an opportunity for two sessions that day. In fact, one of my ideas was to do a normal session in the morning and then a second similar (but necessarily lighter) session in the evening...but wasn't confident that it was a beneficial idea.

I think you'd need to weigh out the fact that in the grand scheme of things, these two extra workouts are probably not going to matter outside of additional energy expenditure. The downside is a potential recovery impairment, which would also be short-term but if you don't address it could cause problems.

For the above reasons I'd say that if you DO decide to do it, just work on form and keep it very light.

I know I'm sort of repeating myself but I wanted to sort of talk out the logic.

I've actually done what your saying jof...so I don't practice what I preach.

I was 24 when this was going though...

Hell I used to lift, chug a shake, then play 1-3 hours of full court basketball. Oh, to be young again.

Given an expanded amount of time available, I would play marathon sessions of Battlefield 3, but that's just me. My workouts already push 90 mins which is more than enough.
