Optimum "bulk" cycle lengths?

I have been reading about bulk/cut cycles and many people recommend or say they do 8 weeks or more (like up to a year) at a time. I would like to know if there is any real reason behind having a particular cycle length. I haven't been able to find any substance behind these recommendations.

Is there a minimum length for it to be effective, for example if it takes so much time for the body to get into an anabolic mode or something like that?
