USEFUL RESOURCES

Hi all,
I was diagnosed and had the laparoscopy operation last autumn (2012) and was found to have severe and advanced endo. In the weeks leading up to the op i found the single most useful book on the subject written by a doctor with over a decade of experience treating it and even longer suffering from it. She covers the symptoms, the op and what to expect, the post-op options for managing it/keeping it at bay, then has a couple of chapters full of the most useful and interesting information about diet, supplements, fitness and well-being. It's not only a resource for learning but a guide to how to give yourself the due care and attention you need. No, i'm not the author or a friend, i'm honestly an individual who's found a superb resource for improving my situation. I followed her meal plans and have never felt better from the nutritional aspect with improved skin and feeling brighter and more switched on. I did it straight after the operation to give my body the best chance to heal quickly and i even lost weight (10lbs in the first week after the op). I appreciate that might be due to my body working hard to repair the damage (they burnt the bad flesh away from a large area) but the meals were incredibly tasty and gave my body everything it needed.
THE BOOK:
Take Control of Your Endometriosis
by Henrietta Norton
She's a British author but you should be able to skip over to the UK Amazon website to get a copy.
During my quest to better understand Endo and what i should change in my life i also found beauty products are culprits for aiding my illness. Parabens are synthetic hormones (Xeno-oestrogens) which, when put directly on the skin, enter the bloodstream without ever going through our natural digestive filtering system (liver, kidneys etc). So our bodies are flooded with what the body honestly believes to be natural oestrogen. This fuels Endo and makes our situations worse. Parabens are any ingredients ending with the word 'paraben' so Methylparaben, for example. There are many more "hormone disruptors" which are synthetic hormones that confuse our bodies, as well as numerous carcinogens (cancer-causing ingredients) and allergens in beauty products from face creams, make-up, body lotions, shampoos and conditioners to household cleaning products. All of these items add up during the days, weeks, years to create a toxic load on our bodies and we are unknowingly piling this stuff into our systems and causing/helping along our illnesses.
I've since found healthier alternatives (UK and US brands) and within the past few months has noticed a difference in my body with improved clarity of thought and skin. Neal's Yard Remedies beauty products are clean with no carcinogens or synthetic hormones. Herbfarmacy are even cleaner beauty products and a firm favourite of mine, whilst Bare Minerals is a new find and their powders and foundations are just wonderful with their 'active soil complex'.
If you want to decipher the ingredients lists on all your beauty products and household goods then the book to use is:
Healthy Beauty
by Samuel Epstein (American)
The ingredients check list in Appendix 1 is the single most useful thing i've ever found and i carry it with me to the shops before i spend hard earned money on products. What's upsetting to learn is the majority of the expensive beauty counter brands are the worst culprits. The upside is you'll likely find local companies making healthy 'clean' options that are far better for you, your local economy and your wallet. Herbfarmacy was a recent find in Herefordshire, Engand (where i'm from) and i'm so happy to be supporting a local farm as well as use their beautiful products.
Finally, my diet now consists of mainly organic and free-range foodstuffs. Animals that arent free-range are usually kept indoors or close-quarters and given excessive doses of antibiotics to prevent illness from the typically awful environment in which they're reared, and hormones to "improve" their growth rate and size (ultimate meat yield). These pass directly to us and cause havoc in our systems.
I find green juices are simply amazing (just one a day or every other day shows rapid improvements in the body due to the phytonutrients), whilst i use Kara coconut milk (i've never drunk animal milk) as a dairy substitute. I have free-range and organic meats and vegetables, salads and fish and take the supplements recommended by Henrietta Norton and feel great. Any carbohydrates are brown/complex but carbs are relatively low in my diet and i eat mainly protein (eggs, turkey, chicken), veg (dark green carbs), salads (dark green carbs), and healthy fats (cold-pressed oils like Extra Virgin, avocados and a variety of nuts and seeds).
I hope this post helps.

Thanks for posting this information. I have never considered the estrogen in beauty products. And I love makeup, I wear it everyday. I never eat foods with soy, or canned foods. I try to eat clean because I start to hurt with endo flares if I eat fake foods.
I will check out the natural makeup beauty book.
I just ordered a endometriosis book titled Stop Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain by Andrew S. Cook. It was just published last year so it has very recent data. This book discusses the effects on the body systemically. Endo is often not just implants in the body but a whole series of conditions. I found this to be true for myself and so many other women in my Endo Support group. Reading this book makes me feel stronger because it helped me to have a better, more thorough understanding of the condition.
I hope you are doing well and winning the struggle with endo!0 -
Thanks for the details! After my diagnosis (SAME story as you!) I read that somewhere but dismissed it as an old wives' tale. I will try to pick up this book and learn more...I'm desperate for relief from my symptoms.0
