First Loose Weight and Then RUN MARATHON ?

Hii There
i want to know , should v first shed extra baggage we have or start training for that very marathon you want to do??
i have lost few pounds, started with jogging , C25K convert to Running, already a Half Marathoner , run 32 km ( run-walk actually)
and now contemplating training for a 50k event in Nov.
But many friends have said that i first need to loose more weight and den should start this running dream ..
oh i am 5'8 , stubborn scale oscillating between 180 to 190... and a 13min/mile runner.
So pl help...

Congratulations on your weight loss so far and on completing a 1/2 marathon- which is no easy feat in itself. How long ago was your 1/2? What is your base miles now? I am far from an expert- I am training for my very first 1/2, but I would think that if you have built up an adequate running base and history that you could/should start training for a marathon-- as long as it will meet your current pace. I am a slow runner, but have found myself naturally progressing each week with training (and I do not do any fancy fartleks, sprints, tempo, etc). I would look for a 20 week or so plan and don't push yourself with speed, it will come with time. Best of luck to you!0

Why can't you combine them??? Lose as you train? Long as you are properly fueling your body, and not eating back exercise calories, should all come together. I shed 24 since Jan by doing this...my first half is May 50

I gain weight every time I marathon train. I don't ever gain sizes but the scales go up. I know I'm not overheating. But it definitely slows my metabolism. Dr has confirmed this with me. There is a great article on runners world website about it. It says you ain because you eat more. I didn't eat more but it still effects me with weight gain.0

That is interesting to know. I am starting to train for a half and plan on losing weight while training. Do you do consistent cross training such as swimming or weight lifting? Does this help with weight loss?0 -
To the other posters point it is tough to lose weight when marathon training unless you are doing tons of miles every week. That said, there is no reason you cannot run a marathon at any weight. I'd do it whenever you want0

On a HALF marathon, I've never had trouble. I've ran many many of them. Weight loss, no significant changes, or holding the same.
Yes, I run 3x per week on the Run Less Run Faster plan, I bike 2x per week. I do Brazil Butt Lift (High and Tight, Bum Bum, and Sculpt 3x per week) I do Yoga one day per week and take one full rest day. I do my DVD workouts in the AM and run/bike on my lunch "hour" depending on what I have planned. My long run is on Friday or Saturday depending on my work schedule. I averaged about 2 hours per day marathon training, no counting my long run. I have a thyroid disorder, which is why the dr suspects it so easily effects my metabolism. My point being, that to be considering a marathon for weight loss, shouldn't be the focus. The marathon and taking care of your body is more important during training. I lose weight on off season following the "Racing Weight" plan.0
