Fluoride?

So I was reading on the STTM site and Thyroid Sexy FB page and there is info there about reducing or eliminating fluoride from your diet because it interferes with thyroid function. Has anyone heard of this? Done it and had success (or not)? How do you find out if your water has fluoride in it and if it does, how to you get rid of it? At this point I am thinking - what DOESN'T interfere with thyroid function?

Good morning and thanks for the question. I did a quick google and found:

Fluoride had been used for decades as an effective anti-thyroid medication to treat hyperthyroidism and was frequently used at levels below the current "optimal" intake of 1 mg/day. This is due to the ability of fluoride to mimic the action of thyrotropin (TSH). It makes sense, then that out of the over 150 symptoms and associations of hypothyroidism, almost all are also symptoms of fluoride poisoning.

I will be checking into this more & if you find something please share.

If you are on municipal water, you can call the water department and they will be able to inform you on if fluoride is added to the water or not and possibly as to the level of fluoride in the water.

If you do a Google search for fluoride water test kit as well as fluoride water filter, there are many options available.

I think the same thing as to what affects the thyroid and the effects of an under active thyroid on the body. It's amazing what can affect it and what all it affects.

Yes, very frustrating. I'm trying not to get burnt out on the things I actually CAN eat. Always seems like the approved list is so short.

I have a water filter on my tap at home and one of those larger ones (like you put on the shelf in the fridge) at work. They are supposed to filter out all those bad things, but I haven't actually tested the water. It does taste a lot better though....or actually, it no longer has a taste, which is good.

As for if it is helping or not....I'm really not sure. I did feel better once I brought the filter to work. However, I really think it is due to the fact that I drink more now, having it there in my line of view. So it's probably from being more hydrated in my case.
