So I'm trying NOT to burn out this go round..what do you think is better? Working out intensely, just losing the weight and then switching to more enjoyable workouts? Deep down I think slow and steady and fun workouts is better for the long haul, but I get frustrated if I don't see the results, wondering what you guys think.

Good question!!! I would like to see what others think on this as well. Me personally like to see results as that always keep me motivated to keep going, but it usually fades away then I stop all together. What I am trying to do this time around is mixed it up more with a couple of intense/high effort workouts and then may 3 days of walking/jogging, sports related/dancing/fun physical activity. I trying to make this more apart of my lifestyle instead of more a chore just to get results. My mentality now is losing weight real fast just to gain it back after I am burnt is not an option. I want to enjoy physical activity with my family even if it just doing a 2 mile walk or playing a dance game on the wii with the kids. If it is more fun for me then it will seem more apart of my daily routine. Yet I still like doing some intense workouts that really burn those calories and fat. Good question!!!

Results come in other ways beyond the scale. I do a cardio workout for 30 minutes M-F and have fun with the kids on the weekends. My cardio is whatever I enjoy doing as long as my hear rate goes up. I suggest making your workouts enjoyable so you don't burn out. I can send you my weekly workout routine set up by my trainer (at Planet Fitness). Not a big secret it is the one he gives everyone. I may have only dropped 3 lbs but my body seems to be transforming. I will take either.

Think about what you enjoy doing and see what you can add to make it a more vigorous workout? Maybe you can put several cardio workouts in a jar and pick one daily - fun way to 'see what you get' and keep things changing.

YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME! I love the idea of mixing both intense and then other days I get to pick from the jar...I'm so silly I literally just giggled over the prospect. Thanks guys!

    Hi,

I agree, mixing it up is key! I get bored so easy with workouts. I personally find high intensity work outs like running the best for calorie burning, but I really love to do yoga, so I usually alternate everyday. I would definitely suggest doing a high intensity work out if tolerated 1-2 a week. It'll keep you body guessing!

LOVE the jar idea, Torra - thanks! I would love to have the cardio workout schedule your trainer gave you.

The following is the training I was provided - now I switch up my days since starting so my body does not get used to the routine so 1 week I will start with Day 3 and the next Day 2. You don't have to go in order. Also, cardio has to be switched up if you like to walk for cardio do at least 5 minutes on the bike or elliptical first for body confusion. I followed this for 3 weeks and lost 5 pounds once adding MFP I lost 3 my first week.

Repetition Range - 10 reps with 15 seconds in between 3 sets.
Day 1 - Chest: press, fly Triceps: arm extensions, kickbacks (free weights), dips (find a stool)
Day 2 - Back: row, rull down Biceps: arm curls, dumbell curls
Day 3 - Shoulders: overhead press, 1 minute arm rotation (stand and twirl your arms) Legs: calf extension, leg curl, leg extension, leg press, hip abduction, hip adduction, glute
    Day 4 - 30 minute circuit
Day 5 - extended cardio 45 min to 1 hour
    Days 1 - 4 cardio and abs 30 minutes
Abs include: torso rotation, ab coaster, abdominal, crunches (40)

Good Luck and let me know if you have any questions.
  • I've decided that this time, in order to succeed at my exercise routine I need to do a workout I enjoy. I love Pilates for core strength, and walking at a fast pace for cardio. Those 2 things I enjoy, and therefor will actually do, and not dread. So this is my work out plan. In the past I tried the heavy duty stuff, and it didnt stick, because I stopped looking forward to the gym.

Here is my gym strategy - I go when Wendy Williams is on - this way I watch her for the first 30 minutes during her Hot Topics and burn the calories away either on the treadmill, elliptical, or other cardio machine. Then since I am already there I may as well do the weights. Before I know it my workout is done.
