Not Losing Weight and Blood Sugars Higher....Argh!

Hey there,
I have been struggling in the last year of so with not losing any weight. I watch what I eat, exercise (daily walking and occassional strength training), not taking any medications and the pounds will not budge. I also play ball in the summer and noticed last summer I was losing in inches not weight though. However, this past winter I came down with pneumonia so my energy was depleted and did not exercise until recently. I guess I am frustrated as I noticed my blood sugars are getting higher and higher in the mornings. Since I had my pneumonia, blood sugars have stayed elevated. I am not on medication because I am afraid of meds. As crazy as this may sound, I do not want my body getting used to medication and no longer fight. I try to maintain my diabetes with diet and exercise and had good numbers (6.0 AIC) with fasting blood sugars between 5.8-6.3 and my cholestrol was excellent as per doctor. He says "keep doing what you're doing". But I have been told from my doctor that medication can help with weight loss and it is tougher to lose weight as a diabetic. To my understanding, if you lose weight, blood sugars are much better. Can someone enlighten me with any information on this. I am at a point that maybe I should go on the meds as my fasting blood sugars are between 8.0-9.5 now. During the days though, they are under in the normal range. Oh BTW, not sure if this is of importance, I am the only one in my family with diabetes as it does not run in my family. Lucky me (sarcasm). Please help! :frown:

Regarding weight loss and Blood sugars
If the T2 is due to Insulin Resistance loosing body fat definitely helps, especially if you are like me and had a lot of visceral fat. However not everyone is the same. I have been lucky my blood sugars started dropping the day I started exercising and eating less.
Regarding Meds
I fall into the camp of believing that if you sugars are elevated you need to get them down - by any means, to reduce the risks we all have of future complications. Just because you go on the meds does not mean you have to stay on them. Lots in this group have gone down this route of starting on meds then getting control and coming off. When I was diagnosed last year, I asked to go on Metformin as I wanted my BG levels lower. My Dr said no, only if the diet and exercise doesn't work.
Hope this helps0 -
When is the last time you went to your doctor? You may need to visit again if it has been a while. Also, is this a general physiciab or someone specializing in diabetes? You may want to also consult a diabetic educator and/or diabetic nutritionist. As you know, diabetes is a very complex disease that is different for everyone. It is hard to say what is causing your blood sugars to go higher.
As my endocrinologist has said to me for the last 6 years, diet and exercise is the best way to combat the disease. Since I have regularly been exercising, eating healthy and dropping lbs, my blood sugars have gone down.
When I was first diagnosed, I was very nervous about the medication and didn't want to go on insulin, but the affects of not treating with medication is worse. the longer the blood sugars are elevated, the greater the risk for problems with feet, eyes, heart, etc. The medication is there to help your body.
I wish you all the best and hope you get answers to help you get healthier!0
