I have never bought lard before. I have been looking it up online to try and find various suppliers and brands. Can anyone give me some suggestions on what I should be looking for and paying attention to?

Does anyone know a brand that is tried-and-true?? Thanks!!!

Anything that is not hydrogenated. I find the lard in stores, get excited, and look and it's hydrogenated. Yuck! You're better off finding it directly from a farmer. A brand that I just discovered, and right now they are just debuting their tallow (WICKED YUMMY), and will soon have duck fat come the end of May and a month or so later will have their lard is a company out of Oregon called "Fatworks."

As for finding that farmer near you, go onto www.eatwild.com and do a search. Anywhere you see pig meat for sale chances are you will be able to get the fat which you'd have to render yourself, but it is VERY easy to do that.

If you are able to get your beef/pork from a grower, usually they can sell you packages of beef or pork fat as well. The beef fat, when cooked, will render tallow; the pork fat when cooked will render lard. I keep a couple of 1 pound packages of pork fat in the freezer for when I need it - otherwise I pretty much stick with bacon fat, coconut oil and olive oil.

Love your title and had to come and see what the fuss was about. I end up eating mostly coconut oil, olive oil, butter, bacon grease and I eat as many fatty meats as possible. I would eat LOTS of lard if I could get it from grass fed animals. Yum.
