I just watched a webinar and it told us how splenda came about.
1975 –A grad student and his advisor were working on new insecticides. One of their experiments involved sulfryl chloride (highly poisonous chemical to humans) and adding it to a sugar solution. The advisor asked the student to “test” the powder. Really late at night the student got the note and in his sleep deprived state he read “taste” the powder. He told the advisor that it tasted really sweet.
So the splenda was found by trying to make a chemical that killed thing off bug. That’s kind of disturbing
