Make sure you really trust your surgeons and doctors to work together, to make sure you are in the best possible health before surgery. Following pre surgery diet and such makes the difference (at least it did for me). Between an easy, uncomplicated RNY Gastric bypass and my friend who had complications. Best of luck. Iwill answer any questins i can. Remember it is a tool not a miracle cure

I'm originally from Winnipeg, now live in Arizona. Had Gastric Bypass in Feb-2012, and wish I did it 15 years sooner! i agree that you need to research your surgeon, and be sure to find one you trust, then follow their advice. Feel free to add me as a friend!

Thank you so much for replying. Any and all info would be appreciated. How long from referral till surgery. what did you have to do before surgery like appointments diets and such. Would it be good for me to start moving towards liquid diets now. should I stop eating meat. I don't drink pop or beer. I quit smoking last year.
I have asked my wife for a gym membership for my birthday im hoping the pool will help.

baisicly where do I start while awaiting a consult.

    thank you Sandra

Meat and protein will be your best friend before and after surgery. You wouldn't be drinking pop afterwards, or really anything carbonated, so it's good that you already don't. As far as what to expect appointment wise, etc. I think different doctors, surgeons, insurance groups require different things. I had a 6 month wait and had to do 6 appointments with my dietitian and see a cardiologist and a psychologist before approval. With that in mind, I was still denied three times, so my 6 month wait turned into over a year. Begin now to focus on your weight and exercise. I could barely walk out to my mailbox before I lost some weight, but do what you can. Practice sipping water because you won't be guzzling or drinking quickly afterwards. Learn all you can about the surgery you are choosing and always, always keep your appointments and stay in touch with your health care professionals. . I am about 7 months out and have had almost no complications at all. I have already lost about 90% of my excess weight and am working on those last stubborn 15 pounds. I hope everything goes great for you too!

as ann said meat and protein will be your ONLY friend after surgery! lol start looking and learning all about the high protein foods now, meats, cottage cheese, fish, nuts ect you will need to know!

start to learn how to read the labels on food packaging also the fat/sugar/protein contents. this also will be a very big help!
Yes join the gym if you can all and ANY exersice will be good I started with just walking (not a lot) at first but it burns cals at the end of the day and that's what matters :)

Find yourself a good therapist that you trust and are comfortable with. Utilize this person on a regular basis, not just for the Pre-Op Psych exam. The bypass is a great tool, but with weight loss (and massive loss at that) comes some realizations that need to be dealt with. You can't bypass your brain/emotions/feelings. I think the therapist has been as intregal a part of this process for me as the surgeon has.

I totally agree with Tricia - look at this as an opportunity to really change your life for the better; get someone to talk to and to help you become a better you all-around. Friend me if you want!
