Is my bariatrician nuts?

I saw my bariatrician yesterday, and she wants me to drop from 1500 to 1300 calories a day, with between 80 and 100 grams each of carbs and protein. And no adding exercise calories.
I read all kinds of things on the forums about how 1200 calories is low enough to essentially slow your metabolism. I weigh 270 pounds, so this 1300-calorie goal seems extremely low.
I'm not sure whether to be excited by the challenge, or horrified at such seemingly tight restrictions.
In case these details are helpful: I have PCOS. I'm doing about five hours of cardio per week, and adding weight training sporadically. Most of my carbs come from things like steel-cut oats, Ezekiel bread, chobani yogurt, and the occasional piece of fruit. And I'm not on any medications.
If her suggestion is sound, I'm willing to give it a try. It just seems a little extreme to me. What do you think?

Try what you doctor wants for at least a month and see how it works for you.0
